Aero worth the wait? Horsehide shootout; Aero vs. Schott

So I've been long overdue and been wanting a Horsehide jacket. I want to be able to enjoy the patina later on so I have to start breaking it in muy pronto (New Year's resolution is to wear it everyday) so I have to purchase sooner than later. And it's my first horsehide so I'm trying to deliberate every single detail.

That said, Aero just told me that they have a 4 months wait. Is it worth the wait? I've been reading the forums and people have been saying Aero is the superior jacket. Is it really, though? How so? Is the fit/leather that much better?

I initially wanted a Schott 618HH btw but unsure of the fit (40 vs 42, would only want to fit a standard hoodie at the most with a 41in chest) ...

never thought about getting a custom from aero until 2 days ago. And then I wanted an Aero until the 4 month wait time! (It'll be summer by then!)

CXFQHH is a nicer looking & aging leather than Schott's regular HH, especially if you like the tea-core (fade to brown) effect on leather. The jackets are too similar for me to definitely recommend one over the other but Indian Ranger is a particularly beautiful style so if money isn't an issue, I would recommend you turn to Aero for that one. Horween CXL alone is worth it.

As for the sizing of the 618, from personal experience, I'd defintiely recommend a sz. 40 for a 41in chest. 42 wouldn't be off but the jacket I had in a sz. 42 felt too baggy and I didn't like it.

There are some neat photos of Aero's Indian Ranger here on TFL, check it out but it's definitely worth the wait & if I'm not mistaken, Aero is the only company making a repro of that jacket.

yes that's what I want! I did just look up how the patina on the Schott HH looks but I can't seem to find a lot of pics unlike aero who has a sample that's aged for 25 years... aren't they both cxl? Also from that one thread it looks like Schott also has that brown underneath or am I wrong? Do black horsehide age with gray?

I also remember you from my other thread a few months back when I asked about the 618!

618HH is not CXL. Usually very selective schott jackets are CXL and all of them currently available in CXL are Steerhide, not horsehide

So if you want CXL + Horsehide, a new Schott is a no go. But you can get used CXL horsehide jackets from Schott such as CXL113 model

I would suggest look into Aero's stock sale pages if looking for immediate gratification. But most of stock jackets sell at very close price levels to custom ones. Better to wait a while and get a customised jacket at almost the similar price

ahh so what does Schott have? And how does it patina?
Also aero has one on stock, but it's "Jerky" not really into that lol

Unless somehow the difference between a Schott and Aero jacket is really a world of difference.

But I would think the key difference is sizing - unless the off the rack Schott fits you really well, you’d be better getting Aero make something that does fit you well. Otherwise you’ll end up selling it here and upgrading later on.

Schotts stock horse and steer I believe are some Italian tannery. Their horse actually creases and patinas beautifully. But it doesn’t have any teacore effect. That means no brown showing through with wear. It just looks like a real nice beat up black jacket. As stated above some
Schotts have come in cxl and they have options. There are always tons of used Schotts floating around in horse, steer, and cxl steer and horse from past runs. I would recommend just cruising eBay, Etsy and grailed to either buy one or see some with wear and patina you’ll find them. But if cost is no option the aero Indian is the way to go. It’s a sturdier built jacket and has more options to play with. Also check their stock/used page as well as Thurstons they may have used ones available. I love the Indian and Elvis jackets from Aero. They are unique and no one else is doing those exact styles. Some similar but none exact. So you can probably find some used Schotts you want in your preferred make up. And may even be able to buy two for the price of one aero. So it’s really about your budget and what you want to spend.

This is an absolute No-Brainer... if the Ranger on the sales pages fits... Get It!
the lining and hardware alone are better than what you'd get on a Schott.
There is zero wait.. you'll be wearing this on Monday.
The Aero Jerky Horsehide is really nice and I wouldn't let that sway me

Ordered December, Lockdown, just one shearling specialist, delivered end of August. But what should I have done with a shearling in the summer? ;-)

The two are very different in terms of leather. Schott is a shiny, thinner, and breaks in faster. Both age beautifully, but differently.

I own both a Schott 618HH (2015) and a Black FQHH CXL from Aero (2017). There is a huge difference in leather. The Schott is much thinner, lighter and butter-soft to the touch (though stiff), completely dyed-through, that will always remain black. Creases nicely and shows nice grain. At areas of wear it tends to lose the shiny top layer.
The FQHH CXL is significantly thicker, heavier and stiffer. It gradually turns to grey and at areas of wear it shows the brown leather colour. The patina it shows (please don't mistake wear for patina) is far more prominent (and easier to get) than the Schott.
Take the price into consideration as well, the Schott's jackets here in the EU are far more expensive than in the US.

it appears that if I buy the aero I'll have the opposite problem, it's gonna be here in the summer

also I am in correspondence with Ms. Holly and Ms. Carrie, one says 12-14 weeks, the other 16 weeks. Would you guys buy it from thurston or aero? Not trying to slander anyone, all business lol I am already stationed in Europe so...

I got this Aero on January 2017. It is shearling lined, I asked for the thickest shearling available and the result was a beast that weighs a ton... It is really warm, thus I have not worn it that much. Moreover I own a couple of leather and flight jackets which I try to rotate. I don't think I wear this more than 15-20 days per year.
