The fact that there is only one news story on this alleged crime. And that this one story was written by an Aerophile is rather troubling.
Having seen behind the scenes, that article reads more like a blog post than news to me.
But journalism has fuzzy borders these days, and not only in the Borders.......

Have to say, on this I'm with Samuel Butler:
"The most important service rendered by the press and the magazines is that of educating people to approach printed matter with distrust."

Except I take it a few steps further and avoid all news coverage in all of its guises. At the end of the day the news is never anything nice that I wanna hear about plus, and perhaps more tellingly, who can you really trust to tell it like it is with no agenda whatsoever?

Can you trust TV? Murdoch's newspapers? The BBC? Yahoo? My answer is I don't trust any of them. In fact, since I gave up on current affairs altogether my life has been better

Can't agree with you Ishmael. Reporters report daily on things that they have a personal opinion on. Political party/affiliation being the number one item of concern to me. You can't have humans reporting and not have some sort of opinion on a subject, can you? Or rather than opinion, favoritism as the case may or may not be. The question is can one report on an issue, have an opinion or "side" and report the facts. That's all that matters. Lets get real, Scotland isn't China, India. Or the USA. The reporting pool is likely rather small in the region, and probably most folks know of the local businesses. I'm not bothered by Sloan's positive view of Aero. I am more bothers when shills show up on forums posing to boost a vendor and / or it's products. Lets keep it friendly fellas. The hosts is watchin', and I'd like to discuss without getting shutdown.

I deal in FACTS Major .....

Someones house got raided by the Scottish Police in Hawick
They took away some jackets and denims ( numbers are unverified so NOT A FACT)
They have given these to Aero ( under hold as evidence - Holly's statement)
No-one has been Charged or Arrested AT THIS TIME


THOSE ARE THE FACTS ..... and that is ALL that can be construed as patently obvious at this time.

Come on .. .correct me if I'm wrong .... isn't that what Sloanies report says ( in summary)

The rest is conjecture, inuendo and speculation ... rumour and gossip ... and quite frankly becoming tedious and boring and of little relevance on here unless said jackets come up for sale ( where I will be in the queue ... I have a simple rule ... never turn your back on a bargain) or there is some FACTUAL evidence to shed further light.

Strikes me this debate is teetering out of control, with what can be said having been said. Why not close this down and give us all time to buy popcorn for the next phase, which will probably be an arrest or arrests.

This definitely isn't going away and at least next time there will probably be names in the frame, so we can then have the undoubted "innocent until proved guilty" debate until that goes haywire.

A couple of decades ago in the US some people started a good news paper which would only print good news. It lasted two editions and folded, and it didn't even announce its own demise before it went because that would have been bad news. That's true BTW.

The simple fact is that the Scotsman - a highly respectable newspaper - has published this article. The story came from the Scottish Police, and had to be verified by the newspaper's legal department before it could be accepted for publication.

All these verifications have taken place, and the Scottish Police are now tweeting the story.

The Scottish police are currently engaged in some very major cases, and so manpower issues mean that not all arrests are made in a short time frame.

Rest assured, this case WILL be resolved in due course. And £140K of stolen goods is not dealt with by just a caution.

Butte, you're completely right, and I am no way insinuating that there is anything non-factual about the story. All I am saying is that, having seen behind the scenes to the staging of the article, it sets off alarms. Perhaps that's a good thing, if it gets us to think about the stage mechanics of the news industry. It's hard to cast judgement without knowing anything about the news room. But, in my naive view, it seems like a good opportunity for a certain reporter to excuse themselves from a story, rather than eagerly write it up.
