Alright guys! I received the fit jacket in a size smaller (size 38) and have posted pics. As before, I'm posting four pics (front, back, both sides) of the jacket zipped, and four of the jacket unzipped. Why unzipped, you may ask? Well, living in southern California, I rarely plan to zip up the jacket, so if it looks a bit snug when zipped, then that's not a big concern for me.

What do you all think? Here are my initial thoughts:
  • My biggest concern is the shoulders--I think they're a touch too small. Compared to the original size I tried on (size 40, pics in the first post), this jacket is 1/4" smaller on each side (so a total of 1/2" smaller in the shoulders), and I actually think the size 40 fits my shoulders better. (Of course, this size 38 fits seems to fit better everywhere else.)
  • The issue of the excess material in the back of the jacket seems resolved with this size.
  • Sleeve length looks good to me.
  • From the back of the jacket, sleeves look a touch baggy--but Carrie said sleeves can't be slimmed.
  • Is the body length too short?
  • When the jacket is unzipped, from the side pics there's still a bit of flaring out at the bottom. What do you guys think? (Obviously the flaring out is less pronounced with the jacket zipped.)
  • Please excuse the pic of the front of the jacket unzipped, as the chest pockets look misaligned but I think I was just leaning a weird way (you can see in the zipped pic, the pockets are fine).
Thanks all, I really appreciate the feedback! I think I'm getting very close to finding the ideal jacket for me!

The sleeves on the more recent size 38 appear too short to me. From what I can observe, I think I prefer the overall fit of the earlier size 40. Maybe if you were to order a size 40 with a center vertical back seam, the fit in the torso might be improved?

Thanks Fanch...I realize the sleeves may be a bit on the short side, but that's what I tend to prefer. At any rate, Carrie says she can add 0.75" no problem.

The center vertical back seam is an interesting proposition. I have no issues with it aesthetically, and I understand it does provide for a closer fit on the torso.

They both look perfectly fine and you could get away with either out in the real world.

I’m going by what you have said, that the 38 is too tight across the shoulders.

I had a 40 BR that was tight across the shoulders. I fought that thing for about 18 months hoping it would stretch and mould to my body but it never did. I ended up selling it and I’m much happier in a 42 now that doesn’t restrict my movement.

Was that in Vicenza?

I would say it just comes down to what you are happy to wear.

For me I've found that while jackets snug fitting chest and shoulders may look a little smarter I just don't find them comfortable to wear and so don't tend to. For me the sleeves on the 38 would be too short as well, but it really is down to personal preference.

I like PN's idea. The 40" looked better across the shoulders and chest but I think the narrower waist on the 38" is an improvement. A 40" tapered to a 38" waist with about 1.5"-2" additional sleeve length would be perfect.

Both jackets look like an ideal fit to me. Perfect really. But just as you said that little tightness in the 40" was enough for you to pass it on. It just goes to show you that pics don't always tell the whole story. Man I want a CR that fits half as good as either one of those!
