Greetings to all Fedora Lounge members and guests:

I would first like to thank MK, Nathan, and Scotrace for the opportunity to have our very own thread here on the Fedora Lounge. It's really exciting to be here.

Aerial Star is a new American leather jacket brand. Our main focus will be the great-looking civilian leather jacket styles of the early/mid twentieth century. We like to use the term "Leather Aviation Jackets" for the styles we'll be offering. Included in this category is: flight jackets, motorcycle jackets, cossack style jackets, and surcoats (or leather aviation coats). As you know, there are multitudes of variations for each of these four style types, which makes the study of this subject so fascinating for enthusiasts and collectors.

Our goal is to remain very faithful to the original jacket brands. However, we also want to have the flexibility of making some changes when necessary. If we find that nothing needs to be changed, we can make an almost 100% exact replica of a particular vintage model. Other times, when we feel some changes are needed, we'll have them made. We don't want to make a reproduction just for the sake of making a reproduction, for we want the jacket we make to be the absolute best it can be. Of course, many things are a matter of personal taste. That's why we feel this forum is so very important. Because before we finalize a particular vintage model, we can discuss it with everyone here, listening carefully to all of your comments and suggestions.

As we state on the website, our jackets are temporarily made-per-order. At some point in the near future we plan on having jackets in inventory ready to ship. In the meantime, a made-per-order jacket should take about 3-4 weeks to ship.

We are currently offering three A-2 style flight jacket models, each for three monthly payments of $189.99. They're available in sizes 34-48, in either russet or seal steerhide.

Send no money -- we ship on approval and deliver free to anyone in the continental United States.

Our website address is:

We look forward to a long and good relationship with you.

Thank you very much,

Chris

Nice jackets, odd way of describing price.

Might not it have been better to start with half-belts? It seems to me there are so many variations of the A2 around already, from the civilian cheapy to the exact copy?

Always good to see more choice, however. Good luck.

Checked out the site and I love the look of it. Your slash pocket version of the A-2 is a jacket I've lusted for and never found anybody who really made it to my specifications until just now. The collar, the cut, the pocket position -- it's like you read my mind. Really good-looking jacket and the leather is a great choice (chrome tanned/aniline-dyed). I'm impressed based just on the pictures. And whoever stitches these together is a real pro.

Best of luck. A nice surcoat in that leather would be a beautiful thing.

Simonc,

Yes, we're using steerhide instead of horsehide. Our American steerhide is a superb tannage for the vintage flight and motorcycle jackets.

Here's an interesting article regarding horsehide and steerhide:

Worf,

Right now, our largest size is size 48. We're not sure if we'll be adding size 50 to our size range. If we get a lot of requests for size 50 we may add it.

Joel,

I'm so glad you like our website and our model 7303. It is a really good-looking jacket. Thanks so much for your interest and support.

We like the vintage leather surcoats, and yes, we think they'll look fantastic made from our steerhide. Not sure when we'll be adding one to our catalog, but it's definitely on the list.

Steerhide is great. Everyone is doing HN now, so don't worry about that. One of my favorite "lesser" jackets is an "antiqued" steerhide. It got a bum rap (steer) when HH became the rage. But they're different and there's plenty o' room for both.

Butte,

What are your thoughts regarding what Marc Weinshenker wrote on the Acme Depot website? Marc writes:

"While the official specification called for horsehide, and while most jackets probably were so made, there was a notable fraction of A-2's made of goatskin and perhaps other hides such as steer. Consultation with a number of independent leather scientists (not tanners or sales people) resulted in learning that once the hides have been processed it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between horse and steer; it can't be done visually, and a positive ID might well require expensive DNA testing..."

Thanks,

Chris

Maybe the seal HH is a little more glossy not as matt than the steer, and the steer softer to touch, I dunno, both are dope, there isn't much in it.
