Hello all,

Just before Christmas, I posted a bit about my dealings with Steve Delk of Adventurebilt. I was asked to share some photos of the Raiders 100% beaver fedora he made me. Apologies for the long wait, but here are some photos. As this is my first high-quality fedora, I'm not able to judge the quality in comparison to others, but it fits me very well and works perfectly with the 1930s-1940s era repro suits I am currently accumulating.

Cheers!

Love oks like a great hat. Love the bash. Nice deep dents in the sides. Now the true question is, are you happy with it?
Wear it in good health.

I ordered and paid for a LC Rabbit from Steve but haven’t been able to get ahold of him via email over the passed week.

Unfortunately Steve is really bad with communication. But he does make his hats in a timely manner and they are fantastic quality. Sorry I can’t help you with the communication issue.

He asked me to pay with Money Order and I’m a little nervous now after reading through this thread.

Long story short he is a one man operation and things got way out of hand. New orders he does in the timeline promised. Look at recent orders and you can’t deny this fact.
May I ask why you want to contact him?

None.

Here’s the story so far:

Back in 07 I received a Raiders from Steve and I love it. He said if I paid an extra $100 he would expedite the order. It came in the mail by Christmas no problem.

On November 26th 2017 I sent Steve this:

“Hey Steve. Love my Raiders you made for me back in 07. I’m itching for a screen accurate Last Crusade in Rabbit. I’m willing to pay the extra $100 like I did before for the rushed order to get it right away if you’re willing to make the hat for me. Let me know....”

He replied:

“Hi. Sure, I can do that. But I am in the process of retiring so I only take USPS postal money orders. This will be the last hat that I make if you want it. Steve”

Me: “What would be the total with the extra $100?”

Steve: “Hi. Well if you pay the extra for a fast delivery, and I would ship it out within a few days of recieving the funds, the total would be 400. Reg price is 300 for the rabbit fedora. I already have a spare rabbit body and it is my last one. And this will be the last order that I take. Thanks. steve”

Me: “Ok sounds like a plan. How should I make the money order out and to what address do I send it? My head size is 24 1/4 inches and I want an LC Rabbit preferably styled and bashed like the Grail Temple scenes at the end of the film but I will defer to your judgment on that.”

Steve: “Hi. Make it out to steve delk send it to 168 christopher drive columbus ms. If you can send it priority with a track number since it is a USPS money order. Will do on the style and crease. Thanks, steve”

December 4th

Steve: “Hey James. I assume you changed your mind? Not a big deal, was just checking in case you had wanted it by xmas. Steve”

Me: “I haven’t changed my mind just crazy running around trying to get stuff done before the holidays and haven’t had a chance. I 100% want this hat and I’m really looking forward to it. Will have the money order to you ASAP.”

Steve: “Hey. Thanks, was just worried you might wait too late to get it by xmas. Might be a xmas present for yourself. I have not had a new hat in years, and that is what I am giving myself this year. lol. A CS since I turned my other Cs into a raiders fedora a few years ago. Thanks, steve”

Me: “I appreciate you doing this for me Steve and I’m sad to see you retire. You truly are my favorite hatter.”

December 9th

Steve: “Hey James. Thought I would check with you to see the status on your possible order. Xmas is fast approaching. Thanks, Steve”

Me: “I apologize for the delay I’m doing everything in my power to get this to you ASAP. Please bare with me.”

Steve: “Thanks, and I generally do not remind a customer, for they either will get it or not, and I have never been in any hurry to take their order. The only reason I seem to be right now is because I will not be making any more hats once december ends. I did get your hat body in, and will hold it for you, since I placed my last order with them and got them in friday. I would have no problem selling it if you cannot get it, for I have already turned down a couple of orders, because the felt maker will close down for their yearly vacation this coming week, and of course that ends any bodies that I might need. And the latest I could order from them was the week that just ended, for delivery before they shut down for the year this coming friday. If you cannot pull it off, you can always get one from John Penman who makes a decent indy fedora. That is who I will send customers to once december ends. Anyways, hope you and your family have a great Xmas! Regards, Steve”

Me: “Please don’t sell it! I’m looking forward to this and I will be able to contact you Monday with a tracking number. Again I apologize for the delay I was finishing up a job to pay for this and they finally paid me. I appreciate you helping me Steve.”

Steve: “The delay is ok James. I understand it isn't always an easy thing to come up with money, especially at xmas time! And as long as you tell me you want this hat body turned into a LC fedora, I will have it for you. I would rather make a hat for a returning customer than a new customer. Thanks, steve”

Money order is sent priority mail.

December 11th

Me:”I don’t know if you’ve started on the hat yet but I told you 24 1/4 and I’ve since lost weight and remeasured three times. I got 23 7/8 twice and 24 once.”

Steve: “Hi. I blocked it, and it is drying as we speak. But no problem with the size change as I have not made the sweatband yet which is where the sizing comes in. I did use the 7 5/8 block but that will work for the size you gave me so no problem at all. Thanks on sending the track number tomorrow. It just lets me know when to go to the mail box since I seldom get mail at the shop and do not check it unless I am expecting something. Thanks, steve”

Part 2

We have a back and forth on the hats used for the Grail temple scene. Steve talks about the Stetson that was used in one scene. Then...

December 15th

Me: “Money order should be in your mail box Steve.”

December 16th

Me: “Did you receive payment okay?”

December 18th

Steve: “Hi. Yep, it made it. Steve”

This was the last reply I received from Steve. I’ve sent 6 emails since asking on the status and letting him know it’s okay if he needs more time I just wanted to know he’s working on it.

Still nothing. I’ve contacted his sister, cousin, brother, anyone who might know or talk to him. His sister claims “he’s very busy and we’ve had a problem with the internet.” Although I’m not saying she’s lying, I am confused as I thought mine was his last hat.

Anyway, I’m pretty bummed. I believed in Steve and was a big fan. I hope I hear from him.

Seventeen years I've wanted that little item and I've been trying to get it. If we must spend another year on the quest... well, sir, it will be an additional expenditure in time of only... five and fifteen seventeenths percent

Beautiful. I would love to have one of those, but my budget keeps telling me no. Maybe someday?
