Hi, I just acquired an Adam hat and have another model for you, Billyspew.

It has the first liner logo on your site listed under executive. The one with the shading and three coats of arms.

On the sweatband it says, "Adam Executive, Cushioned for Comfort" and on the other side, "A Product of Adam, America's Famous Hatter" Next to that there is something that looks like a cents symbol.

The tag under the sweatband says "Executive Club". The price is 7.50 and the size 7 1/4. The tag simply says ADAM with the Broadway address. No union stamp or anything.

It has the broad brim edge and it is a 2 5/8" brim. The color is a light grey-brown. It has an unusual ribbon in that there is no bow and the ribbon is pleated.

I will post pics as soon as I can take some. I got this on Ebay this last Sunday and received it today.

Any idea on the year it was produced? Based on my reading here I'm thinking either just before the war or just after, since there is no "ceiling price" on the inside tag.

It's in amazing shape with only one mothbite, but could use a bit of cleaning. I'm hesitant to have it cleaned, though, since I would hate to have the liner removed or the sweatband, since it appears to be all original and in my experience collecting historic firearms it is best to leave something all original rather than cleaning it. Do they remove these things for a basic cleaning?

Also, there is no reed for the sweatband, it is sewn right to the felt and the liner is sown in.

It fits perfect and was easily shaped without steam. Awesome hat IMO.

I also recently bought a Jaxon Iconoclast in fur felt ( great hat for the money ), a Lock Co., and a Royal Deluxe Stetson from the early '60's or late '50's. This is easily my favorite since it has a large brim and is from, in my estimation, the 1940's; my favorite era.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any insight. I will post pics of it tomorrow.

Tim

So you're the one! I was trying to bid a large amount on that one, but the seller couldn't work out how to remove restriction on international sellers. You got an amazing bargain and I'm very happy for you. Looking forward to seeing some better pics.

What you have is an early 40's Executive (the earliest I've seen).

Here is a nice thin ribbon Adam, model Airliner, color Cloud. Its a medium grey/light charcoal. Original $7.95 price tag was tucked under the liner. Thin felt, lightweight hat. The Adam logo on the sweat is very hard to read but says "Fifth Avenue Quality". I'll add measurements later.

Sorry so late in reply, been quite busy lately...

That's a nice one, Cloud looks like a nice colour.
Looks to be mid-sixties. not seen the Airliner either!

I'm somewhat late joining this society officially, being as I've had an Adam for over a year. I just keep forgetting. But here it is.

NB,
Love it sir! I have two with similar coloured ribbons and they're really great, but that one tops both of mine. Have you got interior details?
Thanks for posting it!:eusa_clap

Adam Executive Homburg

Again, a hat was languishing without bidders, so my so-called resistance melted. This came with its box:

This is a very inflexible hat. 2 5/8" brim, 5" uncreased crown, 2" ribbon, 1 7/8" sweat. The felt's very smooth and immaculate. No damage anywhere. The liner has some foxing, but no soiling. There is a faint mildew odor, so I'll have to dig out a fungicidal essential oil and tuck it into the box.

A big, bold Homburg. :D

A doozy!

Rob... I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your post. The hat looks great on you! Well done!

My recently arrived Adam from Johnnyphi.

I love the colour (almost a non-colour!) which IMO works well for me. The felt is gradually coming to life after a few decades in a box, and is getting softer and richer every time I wear it. Hasn't really been off my head in the week or so that I've had it.....

BillyS, and those who know about these things: any idea on vintage of this one?

Regards, and thanks to all for the 'Adam-inspiration'.

Sorry about the list of links to the pics - haven't been able to work out how to insert pics directly into the body of the post. Any suggestions?

Show us the hats!

Pete... I'm glad you like the hats, but we've been waiting over 2 weeks for you to show us how you shaped them. How did they turn out?

I don't have them all shaped exactly how I want them tho... so you guys gotta wait on the pics!

I am, however, very happy with them! :)

Wow, Sue, another great addition to what is turning into an enviable collection.

Not to stray too far afield here, but do tell ...

What is a "fungicidal essential oil"? Where does one find it? And what kind should a person get, or not get?

Is it mildew that causes that "secondhand shop" smell? Or at least contribute to it? How 'bout that "old chest of drawers" smell?

Billy and Sue, Couple of great Adams! Nice brown felt ribbon/bow combo on the Homburg and very unique bow treatment on the Bowler. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Adam Envoy

An Adam Envoy acquired via ebay arrived last week just before the heavens opened and gave Arizona something on the order of 60% of our annual precipitation in one week.

The unreeded sweatband needs some stitching, and the hat had a faintly smoky smell that cleared up after a few days in a box full of newspaper (Thanks for the heads-up, billyspew!). And there was some dust. That's about it. There are few signs of wear and, after a cleaning, it looks new.

The label under the sweatband says the hat is "navy," but it looks black to me in both natural and artificial light. The brim is 2 1/4 inches on the sides and 2 3/8 inches front and back. The crown is 5 1/2 inches.

As it arrived:

Labels (including United Hatters, Cap & Millinery Workers Union label):

This is my first homburg, and I think I'm sold on the style. My wife took to it, too, even before I gave it a much needed cleaning.

That truly is a fantastic hat, and it really suits you. I can but hope and wait that one comes up in my size.

I'm really happy with this hat. I'm especially looking forward to wearing it to black tie events.

Right now it's off at the local western outfitters getting the sweatband reattached. One of the benefits of living in cowboy country is that basic hat repair services remain available.
