A Snowy Winter in Portland

It doesn't snow much in Portland. When it is cold enough, it is clear. When it rains it is too warm. You rarely get both. This week has been an exception.

I was happy to have my old school, Chicago style overcoat today. It is very heavy and might stop bullets......well.....I wouldn't want to test that, but it is great on a day like this.

Who else is dealing with the elements this week?

It is snowing here in Erie, PA on the shores of Lake Erie.

That fact that it is snowing in Jan is not news. The amazing thing is that we have had hardly any snow this winter and it hasn't been cold. There have been winters where we get over 100 inches for the season and the average temp is in the teens! It's expected to hit mid-30's by Wed.

Global warming: bad for you - good for us.

Stay warm and dry!

High's in the 70's here for the past few weeks. Supposed to get "cold" tonight (lows in the lower 30's).

The night before last we had an ice storm of sorts. I was awakened at several points during the night by large branches falling from the trees that line our street. The trees in the area are still, to quote Stevens, "shagged with ice."

Not so much snow here as ice and sleet -- got up this morning and had to spend a good half hour chipping my car out.

It's supposed to get very cold tonight and into tomorrow -- overnight lows around 6 above, with wind chills to 40 below. My cat and I are already huddled up for the night...

I feel like a whimp saying that it's cold here in redwood country, but everything is relative and it is usually raining and warmer than 25 degrees.
This is a picture of the frost that has been a regular visitor here for the past week. It is raining at the moment, so tomorrow will be a slick one!

The snow here in Portland is gorgeous, although by the looks of MK's picture, he doesn't have nearly as much as I do here. I worked a graveyard shift last night and saw it starting to come down around 5am and not letting up. By the time I got off at 8 I was dreading the commute home. I slid a few times and it took me ages to get anywhere, but my front wheel drive kept me from getting stuck like so many of the rear wheel drive people I was having to stop and help get unstuck. Now that I'm home from work though, I'm not driving anywhere until it starts to clear up. Just going to sit back, relax, drink some warm apple cider and read books and hang out on FL.

I live just south of Tillamook (on the Oregon coast) and I got 5 inches of snow at my house last week and it snowed off and on durring that time and we ended up gettin some ice too. It just finally warmed up enough to rain and start melting off. It is very rare for us to get snow like that in these parts. I kept on thinking this must be what it is like along the coast in Maine-then that would make me think about LizzieMaine up there in Maine... Hi Lizzie, just thinking of you on the east coast in the cold, ice & sleet and here I am on my coast in the snow and ice! But it sounds like it is much colder up there in Maine than it is up here in Oregon though.

We had about 7 inches of snow fall last Wednesday evening. With our temperature ranging from 10 to 25 since, and with another inch added last night, we've been enjoying watching the snow fall, and all of the trees, yards & streets covered with glittery white. We may get more tonight and through Thursday morning. Alas, the forecast is warming starting Thursday. For snow to last this long in Seattle's pretty rare. We usually get 2-3 snows per year, but it melts within a day or two at most. But people are starting to get a little crazed with it lasting this long and getting crazy on the roads. One hot-rodder last night slid through the intersection and disappeared down the hill into the darkness...sideways...

Up here we're at slightly warmer than normal for this time of year, I haven't fussed with the weather reports, but I'm guessing recently it's been -15 ish, today was beautiful though, about 0 and the sun was shining.

I live here in Vancouver close to MK.Been here for 22 years. This winter, the winter of 2004 and 1996 have been the worst.I follow weather patterns and this week has been a fun one!! Home yesterday, today and pehaps tomorrow due to heavy ice and snow pack.We don't have winters like this often and two inches of snow throws the Portland area into panic.
Oh well.I have plenty of vacation time(glad this didn't happen in december!)and food stocked up.

There are other in the States going through a lot worse!!!I feel blessed.

Snow in Portland, cool! If only they would learn how to clean it up properly!

The last time we had snow in PDX when I was there,
I used to work 2nd shift at KOIN. rode the motorcyle to work (pretty much everyday) the sun was out, not to cool.

I walked out that night to find 3 inches on the ground!

Needless to say, the ride home that night was very slow going.

Here in Bean town, 10 days ago it was near 70. Today it is 9 degrees.
A light dusting where I work, but that's about it.

Snow there is a rare thing....are they using the squeegies or the plows? ;)

Enjoy, I need to call my sis and see how she's doing out in Hillsboro.

I know! the roads are awful! But loving the snow to no ends! I"ve got BIG plans on making huge snowmen with my girls today, plus the dogs are loving all this stuff, every chance they get their running wild out in the back yard, burrying their faces into it...very cute:D
