A Great Surprise

Hello Everyone,

This is my third post, for those who haven't read my other posts ,I am a Canadian currently teaching English in China.
I received a new hat today I ordered here on Taobao.com.It's a Chinese version of Amazon.I was not expecting much but turned out great.I had ordered a cheap wool ,black fedora. It was supposed to be made at a hat factory here for a company called Lihua Hat co. in Hubei. The price was $21.65 USD. Due to holidays here it took a week, most things take 3 days max.
Well today my hat arrived, not a cheap wool hat.The hat says handmade 100% fur felt.Made by Tirranno Fine Fur hats Superiore. It also says made specially for Baron Hatters of Israel. It seems well made and very beautiful. However I only have my Christy's Adventurers to go by.It's much stiffer that both of my Christy's. It has a bound edge and an extremely wide brim 3.3".I think I might have to have it cut down but the bound edge is nicely done ,I don't really want to chance someone here messing it up.
Does anyone know anything about these hats or the company mentioned?

Take care from China,Peter

Congratulations!

I've never heard of that company, Peter, but congrats on your nice surprise.

It's also cool, teaching English in China. My cousin did that for a time. It was very rewarding to him, as you will know.

Also, welcome to the Lounge!

Thank you Blackthorn,
I have found this site to be a wealth of information on so many things not just fedoras.
Teaching is good,I was a C.O. at a max prison for 10 years in the Seg unit.At least my students don't wish to kill me lol.
As for the hat I should add that the crown cam pre-creased with a center dent and stands 5.7 " at its height.with a brim of 3.3 inches. The ribbon is 1.2 inches. It also had a wind cord. I am converting from metric. The edge is bound with ribbon.Leather sweatband is marked Tiranno Superior Quality Hats 100% Fur felt:Handmade, furthermore on the opposite side Made Exclusively for Baron Hatters Israel.Exclusively is spelled wrongly printed Exlusively. On the lining which is white is says Tiranno Fine Hats 100% fur felt Superiore( spelled with an e on the end.Below that is printed Best Quality Hats specially made for Baron Hatters Israel.I am thinking it loks like a hat a rabbi would wear.Any ideas? Anyone?
My wife has my dig. cam and had to go back to P.I. for a bit.It looks like the fedoras in this picture http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_d4zmqSfE-J8/S8uZA7uu9EI/AAAAAAAAEsw/MgBJXEPG7-c/s1600/Haredi+-+hats.jpg
Thank you, Peter

Peter, it sounds like you have the classic Hassidic hat, especially the part about being made exclusively for Baron Hatters Israel. It doesn't get much more Hassidic than that. :)

I agree with Blackthorn, souhds like they provide hats for Orthodox Jewish groups in Israel. Interestingly, the Amish here in Ohio, although totally different theology, wear long beards and broad-brim black hats.

I think it has been discussed here on some other forums about the increase of fur felt hat production in China. It would be interesting to see how the quality compares to American or European made hats.

I picked up a very similar black on black hat. It is an Amish hat made in Berlin, Ohio. It's very heavy fur felt (the sweat says fur felt and says XXXXX). Looks to be pretty good quality to me but I'm pretty new to this.

I had one for a while, I also got in Berlin, somehow lost track of it many years ago. I think they are made heavy duty since the Amish use them for all outdoor activities, so they probably need to be fairly weather resistant. I would guess they have a spare for "Sunday go to meetin" uses.

Wonder what shipping to the states might be. Hat itself seems like a good deal if you like those dimensions but once you add in the shipping........

Wow, both of those look like very nice hats. Yeah, that brim is pretty big. I'd feel like I was Amish in that. lol But some peoples faces are built for wide brims, mine isn't one of those.

The brim on mine isn't that wide. I'd say it's around 2 3/4"

Well, my face is suited for more of a 1 3/4" to 2" brim, so I guess that's why. It just seems pretty big in the picture on that TaoBao site.

If someone is interested let me know,I can order it for you.I think I or whomever should find out the cost of shipping to the U.S. to see if it's even feasible.

Congrats...

Congrats for finding a surprise like that. I would never order anything from China, myself, but I am glad you are happy with the purchase.

When I was in Beijing a couple of years back, all I could find were very stiff wool hats, but I had my Fed & my Lagomarsino traveller, so I really wasn't looking for a hat. But w/ the exchange rate, everything was so cheap. And the BEST FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD- bar none. I thought the Italians were foodies, brother they got nuttin' on the Chinese.
