A couple of lids

Good Evening,

I am new to the list and a friend of a lounge member who got me into vintage Fedora Hats. I look forward to being on the list.

I always liked a Fedora but never had one; so a couple weeks ago I bought new; a Dobbs Dayton and a Miller Amherst. The other day when I was talking to my friend, I happened to have my Dobbs on; that was when he enlightened me on vintage hats. My friend has a lot of experience in hats and a collection as well; and he has re-done quite a few for himself. He offered to jazz up the Amherst for me....I'll take him up on that and in the process learn something about fixing up a hat. I like the Amherst but I felt it needed a little something to liven it up. So with some advice and a forward of some e-bay links, I ordered some vintage Grosgrain that I think will dress up the Amherst very nicely and I look forward to seeing it transformed into something more personalized.

So armed with a little new knowledge on vintage, the very next day I got lucky, I acquired a very nice 50's Cavanaugh and will be getting a sweet looking Adams Premiere in a few days which I think may be a 40's era hat. As I get familiar with this web site I will post some pictures.

I always liked vintage things, cars, motorcycles and Bamboo Fly Rods; since I can't afford to buy a vintage cane rod, I learned to make my own from scratch.......now hats....that's something I can afford from time to time. I look forward to building a collection and who knows......I'll probably make one one of these days just like when I had the itch to carve a briar pipe; I dig making my own things.

Buying Problem...........BIG HEAD ! Size 7 3/4:eek:

If anyone could ever help me out with a nice Vintage hat my size, I appreciate the help. I look forward to hearing back from you in the forum.

Have a good one !

Tim

Welcome

Tim the Cane Rod Maker - welcome to the Lounge.

I would offer up one of my hats, but I'm a teeny 7 1/2! lol

Welcome to the lounge, Tim. You'll like it here. But beware lids are another pit for your money, a good one and a deep one. :eusa_doh:

If you found two vintage hats that size already, you're well ahead of me. I'm a 7 5/8, but in extra long oval, so I take 7 3/4 or higher in regular oval hats.

I'm jealous you found large vintage hats so quickly. Nice going.

The lids

Lucky for certain.......I'm sort of shocked my self. There was a hat on e-bay; no size mentioned......I took the time to look at the auction; when I saw what it was; well I just threw in a bid and a significant one. I scored it for about 7 dollars more than the new Dobbs I bought....it looks to be in excellent condition. I can't wait to get it. I already made up a set of feathers to go in it. Nice thing about tying flies also......I have a ton of feathers on hand so I made a very attractive feather pattern to put in the ribbon. :D

Skyvue.....there is a hat your size on e-bay now

There is a hat your size now on e-bay. Not sure of the maker; but it's a vintage felt.
Dark Navy in color. The pictures stink though.....but maybe you could get them to send you better shots. Also there is 2 yards of vintage navy/purple highlight Grosgrain on e-bay....it sure would look good on that lid.
Go get it .....:eusa_clap

Welcome Tim, glad you finally joined, you're gonna love this place. You'll be a connoisseur in no time. :D

Thanks for the welcome.....

Razzman, thanks for the welcome. I just got back from Bolthead's house; he showed me how to steam and bash a hat. He turned my Dobbs Dayton into a Porkpie Bash which definitly looks well on me. And he gave my vintage Cavanagh some attitude. Its amazing what you can do to a hat. I am off to a good start. I can't wait to get my Adams next week and to see what becomes of it.

Thanks for the welcome....

Any word on the Adams yet? [huh]

The Adams

Good news; although The Adams is not in my hands yet, the cash is in the hands of the person handling the transaction for me. I spoke to the owner tonight and he will be getting in touch with my Third Party assistant tomorrow to make the transaction. He asked I immediately call him when I get it to let him know what I think of it and assured me I will be extreamly happy with this hat. I'm stoked.

Bolthead........you'll need to give me a hands on session and walk me through steaming, brushing and bashing the lid allowing me to do the work. I appreciate your help and vast knowledge on the subject. You do fine work ! I have the Dobbs Dayton turned Porkpie on tonight. I had a few people tell me how nice it was. :D
