They are the bone backing buttons of the collar buttons.

As per ELC's site....

Custom made real horn backing buttons, again in absolutely the correct shade, and dimension.

consider it a test bed. Cook it in the clothes dryer, spray on some of that overcolor that wears thru, do patches, and like that.

Smaller buttons would help too. Those things are the size of 50¢ pieces.

The $100 A1,not a bad jacket Fletch! but the comment toss it in the trash and YUCK is obtuse.The knockoff high priced REPO A1`s from the big shot makers(not GW) are still and will always be REPO`s.Personally I don`t own an A1 and never will not at those prices.They don`t follow the rule form follows function either,the pockets are too small, buttton`s? the collar is floppy looking and it seem`s this jacket is to be worn under another coat from the few pics I have seen.What a tedious thread,move on.....

Why, because you say so? You may not be interested in the intricacies of the A-1 but many are. And, no, it wasn't meant to be worn under another coat, it was a 1930's garment made for the flyers of the day. It's a most interesting jacket because many originals do not exist and the ones that do are generally in private collections and don't get looked at much so as to do a good repro. ELC has hit the nail on the head with this jacket. As have several other makers. Several types existed, different shape pockets, different sizes, shades etc. So, for you to say it's tedious is what's really offensive. Why don't you take the time to read the thread instead of picking words out of context to stir the pot. This thread has quite a bit of great info from many worthy contributors none of which would touch the plastic piece of crap which was spoken about earlier.

Steve, I agree with you the ELC is top notch (I have one too) as is the GW, but I think it's great that the cheap Amazon one was brought up here and pictures posted of it. Why not? Why all the negativity towards it. What does it hurt... actually if you think about it, it's helpfull if nothing else. I mean you do realise that during the course of reading through this thread certain non-fans of the A-1 may have become somewhat intrigued with them... maybe just enough to get their toes wet with a "starter" A-1, something that is not $600+ and that'll scratch an itch (so to speak). Of course it won't be for the more serious A-1 afficianado but that's not the point. I suspect you already realised all this, but I guess I had to take the bait? Anyway your ELC looks absolutely amazing, mine is exactly like it... grainy seal colored capeskin from their initial mock up for the new offering. I'd actually prefer their new russett color but those have quite a bit smoother surface, I prefer the grain of this one. I just wonder why it wasn't possible to get both grain and russett brown, I mean the original A-1 that they use for their advertising is real grainy to...

Not to imply thing 1 about Senicko here, but I've heard cries of sour grapes amongst many kinds of collectors when something becomes widely available that didn't use to be so. When you come down to it, many of us regard our fanship as almost an elite society. If we could, we would keep it as difficult and/or expensive to "enter" as it was for us. Anything else, we may feel, devalues the hard work and learning we had to do, or the money we had to spend.

I'm part of an informal group that circulates digital dubs of out-of-print 78 records to anyone willing to contribute volunteer time, money, or source material. In doing so, we've hipped a lot of people (including some fairly influential musicians) to some music they could never have heard otherwise. But one guy - with one of the most interesting and rarest collections - actually wanted to limit our sharing to people with source material only. Again, an elite society; them that has gits. His rationale was twofold: a) he didn't care to share his records without a constant in-flow of new music he didn't have, and b) he felt that granting access to anyone who hadn't put in the time, money, and effort to build a collection of their own was an insult to the time, money, and effort he had put in, in addition to possibly bringing down the investment value of his well-nigh-unobtainable original 78s.

I, OTOH, have put loads of time, money, and effort into my collection (tho I no longer collect actively), and yet I find it both a joy and a source of deep pride that some of it is circulating digitally. The only conclusion, I guess, is that we all do what we do for different reasons.

Turnbull and Asser

Here's a type A-1 style jacket I photographed on Boxing Day
in the window of Turnbull and Asser, London. Happily the store was not
open so I never found out the hideous truth about the price.
The knits are hard to see, but very accurate and nice on the wrists.
The pockets, of course, are all wrong and there are no snaps.
Of course the collar is wrong, too. Sort of a A-1/A-2 hybrid, I guess.
