I've been thinking of getting my son a graduation present and was considering the AVILTHR A-1 for its looks, pricing, and light weight (for here in Miami). Anyone have any advice on them? He's a big guy who works out and has big shoulders and arms and a small waist. Would their A-1 suit that kind of build?

For some reason it appears to be rotated in my screen, I'll help you with that:

The fit is just fantastic on you.

I just had an Aero A-1 made for me, I went with the Italian Horse hide in seal brown with Carmel knits and stitching, I think it looks fantastic!

That is indeed a beautiful jacket & a totally nailed fit :)

I was never sure about A-1s when I initially got into vintage flight wear but it's become one of my favourite designs.

It definitely is a great design, and yes the fit of this is very nice, one of the reasons I love Aero leathers, customization + premium quality products :)

It's a rather slim build jacket as they originally were made, you may want to to order a size or two larger for him if his on the broader size

I've got broad shoulders / back and sized up from my usual 46 to a 48 ELC A-1 to get the desired fit...

Thanks, guys. Tomorrow I'll measure his chest and arms and maybe email the company, but I think you're probably right about sizing up a bit. I just saw them on another thread here, and the more I look at the pics and read about them the more I like them. I'm just wondering how much the customs might be, but at this price it can't be too bad.

I've posted questions about the AVI LTHR in another thread. I'd like to get an A-1 in capeskin to wear in warmer weather. Of those who manufacture an A-1 in capeskin, AVI has the best price.

Here's some info I received from the company via email (they are not very responsive. I took several emails and days of waiting to get a reply):
  • The capeskin is sourced from South Africa.
  • The main buttons are horn. The backing buttons are plastic.
  • There are no ventilation holes at the arm pits.
  • Even though my chest measures 40", they recommend I purchase a size 38 for a "trim fit."

The plastic buttons don't bother me, as they could be easily replaced. The cotton sateen lining I asked about earlier doesn't bother me, as other A-1 makers at higher price points use the same lining material.

But what about the lack of ventilation holes? Would this be a deal breaker, or are they even necessary with a light capeskin leather jacket?

Also, what about VAT? I've never had to deal with this, so would I incur significant customs expenses if I place an order?

Thanks. With regard to your last two questions, the capeskin is very light: I have a 1940's jacket made from it and it weighs almost nothing. As for the VAT, it seems that the cost is already built into the existing price: when you check out they simply deduct 20 % from your price of purchase (meaning that you don't have to pay it). Then again, that money will probably have to go for customs at this end. Still, it's a great price.

Thanks for the info. Purchase made. I chose the lighter capeskin in a size 40 (based on the size chart AVI posted, I don't see how a 38 would work for my chest). $263.20 is the price pre-VAT.

Photos and impressions upon its arrival.

Maybe going off topic here, but I'm looking for an A1 style baseball/ varsity jacket, 100% wool. Something like the above from ebbets, but logoless and not leather sleeves. Lined, to make it warm enough for winter. Preferably not in green as well?

Any suggestions?
