Can someone explain the appeal/purpose/potential of Second Life?

Is there any vintage, retro or time travel appeal to it, or is it all boxy, tie-dye-looking, thrown together hideousness?

Just wondering.

What I get from reading things about second life is that it's just a fantasy world for people to live a life they haven't gotten a chance to live? There is not vintage feel to it at all. I have read that some company's have meetings on there. I dunno i'm not sure what exactly the appeal of it is exactly besides you making up a virtual image of yourself and making it look the way you've always wanted to look. But i've heard stories of people meeting up on there and finding loves and such. You have to download the program on your computer before you use it so, unless you have ALOT of hard drive space to give up and a great processing speed, I would say its a big waste of time. IMHO

Can someone link to this "second life"? I don't know that I've ever heard of it before.

Imagine people sitting at home on a computer and interacting with people they have never met in person, instead of getting out and experienceing the real wor......Oh, wait a minute. Never mind.

The only thing I know about SL is what someone else has told me. She is baffled by it, but at the same time, she is unable to leave.

She explains how, given infinite scope in their appearance, everyone on SL ends up looking the same anyway. All the girls are chesty and scantily clad, and all the boys are ninjas or whatever.

Instead, this girl is a Happy Meal. Her character on SL resembles an entire Happy Meal. Fries, drink, the lot, all piled together. She wishes SL was more like this. Nobody else there gets her.

Imagine a room full of people, none of whom are people. Imagine spending the afternoon sipping cocktails, and having a conversation with a Happy Meal, a Swiss cheese plant and something that is half golden retriever and half dolphin. But it doesn't happen, because everyone in SL looks and acts the same. This strikes me as strange, since these people are choosing to dwell in an imaginary world whilst showing little imagination.

No doubt. If given the option to be absolutely anything I wanted in a virtual world, I might get somewhat addicted. It would be fun for a while I think. Maybe combine Rampage with this and appear as a 50 foot gorilla,....hmmm,...:)

My brother's fascintated by it. It's a virtual world, you go online, get a sim, buy property etc, basically live on line. Experimentally ingenious, in now time a cult/nerd thing, for the future - a disaster in my opinion. I tried to get in to check it out but my current pc card isn't up to it, so I'll hang fire - not exactly desparate!! I can refer to an author if you like.

Can you, like, make yourself look like Edward G Robinson and drive a 36 Coupe out to the Bijou where you sit in a virtual theatre and watch Dodsworth, then go for an egg cream, and then a turn at the dime-a-dance?

Or is that hoping for too much?

Not Second Life, but there was an online environment set in 1937 Los Angeles as part of a tie-in to The Thirteenth Floor. By the time I visited it was all bots. If you have the DVD there should be a web link on it if the environment is still up. If no one has the DVD I will post the link when I get access to mine.

Hmmm. Not too sure about internet things like that, but that Kristi Lu Stout chick that keeps talking about it on CNN International sure is fine! :D

The thing with Second Life though, if you can really get into it, (I couldn't, I tried before everyone else got on the band wagon, I'm just not nerdy enough) is that you can make a living on it also. You can make a real living there. If you know the ins and outs enough or whatever, you can sell what you create and have a second income. That is one of the attractions that people have found for Second Life. As previosly mentioned, companies will also have biz meetings etc.

So, if I'm all thumbs in real life, and can't make anything any sane person would buy, would I be less thumb-ed in 2nd life, or would my thumbs be squared?

Most critically: Can you buy a hat in 2nd life?

Over here

I know of at least one university that is either already (or planning to) hold lectures on 2nd life. They have an avatar student to show you around etc.... makes me want to cry......

2nd Life: Steampunk

Evidently there's a world you can visit there that is all steampunk stuff. Before you go you would purchase the appropriate Victorian clothing (and hat of course). Once there you are able to experience all manner of Steampunk adventures and interactions.

Don't fool yourself though, there's a lot of furries with giant phalluses walking around even in the "normal" areas.

There are whole districts devoted to various perversions, including pedophilia and bestiality.

Just like the internet at large, the sex whackos are a big percentage.
