The new 2019 Midway Movie just came out and was curious who made the wardrobe of the A-2's M422a, deck jackets, and G-1 Jackets used in the film?

I was wondering the same thing.

The G-1s look utilitarian. They don’t feel, “high end repro” to me. About as you’d expect from the Cockpit maybe? Based solely on a few small screen snaps.

I've searched with no luck. The A-2 looks like Goodwear?

Just saw the movie. The G-1's are mostly modern day contract jackets. One pilot has one that looks like a L.W. Foster 1950's G-1. There are no M-422 jackets in the film that I saw, Repro or original.

Dick Best, and Adm Nimitz are both wearing modern day G-1 contract jackets. They have synthetic collars and the big tooth #10 Brass Paperclip style zippers that were introduced in the 1960's. These jackets as many know, are plentiful and cheap in the jacket market. They look like actual used contract jackets to me. The Dynel collars are worn in and they are broken in. It would be cheaper to buy used USN ones than contract them out to a repro maker.

The A-2's do not look good to me. They look cheap and flimsy and ill fitting on some of the guys. They are not Good Wear. 100% sure. I heard they may be SM Wholesale. Doolittle's jacket looks OK, but still not great in my opinion.

I really enjoyed the movie! The flight scenes were fantastic and I think the story of the battle was presented well.

Deck jackets, I don't know but I was thinking Bronson during the movie. Being a historical USN fanatic, I was very put off by seeing those huge brass teeth and synthetic collar on Dick Best's G-1 in his first cockpit scene. It was like a Halloween costume that is just not quite right. However, for the general public, it will go unnoticed I am sure.

Regards,
Jay

Yes there was the one 1950's G-1 on the deck worn by a torpedo pilot with the light collar. In the ready room, I recall spotting a possible Ralph Edwards 1960's G-1. There were a few real fur jackets sprinkled in. Again, I believe they were all real G-1's. Not Reproductions.

Just got back myself and agree with everything said here.

The big brass zips and Dynel were the things I noticed initially on the web that made me think modern repro.

But seeing them more closely on screen reveals more variation and what are almost certainly some originals. The light fur collar on the one Ensign’s jacket looked the nicest of the bunch.

The torpedo squadron commander’s jacket had a huge collar...anyone know what manufacturer might have made that one?

Overall, I thought it was better than the initial reviews might have suggested.

It was an attack pilots movie for sure though and contrary to the old saying,

“Fighter pilots make movies, attack pilots make history!”

not a Buffalo or Wildcat in sight. [emoji6]

American Patrol Caps custom made the Admiral cap for actor Woody Harrelson (who plays Admiral Nimitz)...
I enjoyed the movie very much, despite the lack of authentic jackets and the heavy use of CGI.

I agree there are some original G-1 In the film. I enjoyed the movie and will defiantly be on the look out when the DVD's are out!

I appreciated the caps and field dress uniforms, though I wondered if they wouldn’t have worn better in the O club.

Still, I thought the uniforms looked believable and the CGI was far better
than most I’ve seen. There were a few times I wondered if they weren’t actual aircraft.

Back to the jackets. If you look at Halsey’s “m-422” you can see that they had removed a name patch before pinning wings on there.

It's nice to know other people in the world who too feel that CGI can stink. Though I suppose it's necessary today to construct something believable, I do prefer the original Midway very much so.

This both was and wasn't a jacket movie, namely because the life vests obstructed my view! Nothing touches Bridges at Toko Ri.

Saw the film on Friday and really enjoyed it. I was not expecting much, after Pearl Harbour and Redtails, but was pleasantly surprised.
Yes, CGI heavy, but there simply would be no other way to make this. No Dauntlesses about or WW2 Carriers etc.
Flight sequences were thrilling!
Certainly not going to win any awards and perhaps a bit too ambitious, covering PH, Doolittle Raiders and Midway, and all else in-between, but 'ell... A WW2 movie with planes and jackets... will get me to buy to a ticket.
Was well-focused on the jackets and right with the comments above. Awww Bests's G-1... Clearly a modern original, looked good, but that dark brown collar, eeew.
Pity though, with so much detail apparently put into the film and getting things right, they 'forgot' a BIG small detail. Flight jackets!
There are a number of great makers that could have provided iconic and accurate M422 and M422As, even a few originals about.
Even the A-2. Its well known Jimmy wore a Dubow, why not have someone make Aaron a Dubow...
Would have added a level of authenticity.

most certain the Doolittle A-2 is SM Wholesale (pocket flaps give it away!) as well as some of the Navy uniforms and blue deck jackets. M422's look mostly like post WW2 G-1's. I enjoyed the movie.

LOL, it had occurred to me that this movie might usher in the next retro leather jacket trend and I’d be “another wannabe” instead of occupying my currently coveted position as “charming grognard”!
