My dad recently sent me an ebook of Mary Quant's Classic Make-up and Beauty. Mary Quant popularized the miniskirt, an iconic fashion that reached its zenith in the 1960's. She was also a talented make-up artist, creating many of the mod looks we love. Here are a few pages from the book, on Sixties Style makeup, which I thought I'd share:

That nearly looks contemporary. I've been trying to apply my eye make-up as darkly to distract from a dark scar above my lip. It only looks good while applying the eye make-up in front of a well lit, magnifying mirror. Once I step away from the mirror and put my glasses on for near sight correction, you can hardly tell I'm wearing anything on my eyes.

I actually like the softer make-up styles on some of these actresses and even though they extensively used hair pieces to make the hairstyles look fuller I still like some of the soft yet smooth styles.

Those two were my inspiration for how I did my eyeliner in the 1990s. It looked outrageous to most people and sadly I didn't have the sense to tone the rest of the make-up down.

I didn't even know their names and didn't understand why my friends relatives kept calling me Asha, I thought they made a regular mistake so I'd reply: "no, it's Joannah". Of course they were making reference to the actress (I've also been called Vijyanthimala and Meena) so obviously I was doing something right with the make-up even though I look nothing like those ladies.

British model Jean Shrimpton

In 1965, Shrimpton caused a sensation in Melbourne, Australia, when she arrived for the Victoria Derby race during Melbourne Cup week. She shocked everybody by wearing a white shift dress which ended 10 cm (3.9 in) above her knees, a forerunner of the miniskirt which became a worldwide craze (this dress was designed and made by the young fashion designer, Colin Rolfe). Moreover, she wore no hat, stockings or gloves and wore a man's watch, which was very unusual at the time. Shrimpton was unaware she would cause such reactions among the then-prim Melbourne community and media.
