Let me tell you something, just between you and me, I once read this, I dont don't if it's true or not.

Once a pudgy soprano, Maria Callas became a glamorous opera star after losing weight because she ate a tapeworm - on purpose, some say.

(Tapeworms, which live inside the intestines and eat food before you digest it, can cause weight loss - but experts strongly recommend against the practice. If a tapeworm leaves the intestine, it can cause seizures, fever, and cystic lumps. So that's a big no, no needless to say)

That's insane! I'd bet my back teeth that they'd be less interested in reviving the fad if they could actually SEE the unsanitized end product. Geez, I realize women have always faced a tremendous amount of pressure and scrutiny about their beauty value...but to willingly ingest a parasite? It boggles my brain.

That particular "Sanitized Tapeworms In A Jar" ad is an internet hoax from about ten years ago -- note that it includes a number of computer-based fonts that didn't exist a hundred years ago -- and was most likely inspired by the Maria Callas legend. Keep in mind, too, that while a tiny waist was en vogue at that time, being skeletally thin was most certainly not -- someone tapeworm-thin would have been stigmatized as a poor unfortunate, not praised for being in the height of fashion.

The tapeworm idea, however, has resurfaced a number of times over the years, most recently *this year.* Obviously we aren't as wise to diet scams and swindles nowadays as we think we are.
