    Any one like Flying Boats?

How about the Japanese Flying Boats? I kind of dig the WW2 Japanese variants: Kawanishi H8K "Emily": Kawanishi H6K "Mavis"

What's the best source for vintage buttons?

is there a single website or collection of websites (other than eBay) for finding vintage buttons? I have numerous vintage garments, both military and civilian, missing their buttons. Searching eBay is fun but time-consuming and often fruitless. Any suggestions?

How do I Clean a 50s Pea Coat

Recently I found a 50s era pea coat in great shape overall, except for some blotches of a tacky substance (seems like pine tar) on the front. Any suggestions for cleaning that won't damage the coat? Thanks!

    Are These WW2 Breeches?

Can anyone tell if this pair of US Army breeches is from the WW2 era? Before? After? There are no markings of any kind inside. The pockets are HBT material. I couldn't find them listed in From Doughboy to GI The wool is just like WW2 era Ike jackets I've had. Any ideas?

Indentify/ date this US Navy Coat

Hello FLers I just came by this heavy wool US Naval Academy coat and I'm wondering what it's designation is and what era it's from. I've seen a lot of pea coats but never a coat like this. The wool is thick an heavy like an older pea coat, but this one is long like a trench...

    Help Identify this Miliary Jacket

Yeah, that German shirt is close -- but this isn't HBT and the buttons are way different. Cuffs are different, too.

    Help Identify this Miliary Jacket

Hey Guys and Gals, Here's another thrift store mystery: It's a light khaki colored, heavy cotton jacket, with that old fabric feel that comes with a long storage. It's a button up front hidden by a flap. The buttons are dark greenish plastic -- almost have a bakelite feel...

    Date this Vest, please!

Hey they FLers, I found this very busy vest the other day at the local second hand store and my first guess was 60s or 70s disco era... But the vintage Towncraft tag looks 40s or 50s to me. It's made of nice quality rayon as well. I know that there were plenty of loud ties...

    Is This A Military Jacket?

Thanks for the info guys -- I actually thought it might Danish when I first saw it.

    Is This A Military Jacket?

Hey military experts, here's another mystery garment from the thrift stores: It looks to me like a naval item. Thin cotton/ poplin-type material with very utilitarian buttons and unrefined twine-like drawstring. Has an oversized hood. Only markings are a crown (British...

Is This A WW2 Era Mess Kit?

It measures about 5" X 7" -- I was thinking it might be missing a securing bolt or latch. Any clue what the metal ring would be for?

Is This A WW2 Era Mess Kit?

I found what looks like an old mess kit -- it's not US issue I'm pretty sure. Does anyone have an idea about the origin/ era ? The only markings say "A5" and "B". Thanks in advance.

    Mystery Leather Peaked Hat

I almost did a google/ wikipedia search on that until I read your next paragraph. Your dissembling certainly has the air of authenticity. :p

    Mystery Leather Peaked Hat

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking "hippie" at first too -- but the look, feel (stiff with some brittleness on the strap), and the older smell of the leather seems to me to pre-date the 60s/ 70s. I was actually thinking teens or twenties as well.

    Mystery Leather Peaked Hat

Here's an odd thrift store find I'm hoping some one might have some idea about its origin. It's made of leather -- but it's very old leather, the hat is stiff and the strap is somewhat brittle... It seems to be somewhat like a campaign hat with a smaller peak. The strap inserts into holes...

BBC Confirms Segregated Liberation of Paris in 1944

Yet another reminder that the true story of WW2 heroism is multi-racial, despite what the pictures and movies recorded: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7984436.stm

    Back Yard Find

Here's a better pic of the base. Says "43" -- can i assume this means 1943? I don't want to explode my house or anything with unexploded ordinance but the twelve-year-old inside me wants to go dig for buried treasure now. :)

    Back Yard Find

So yesterday I was digging a hole for a plant in my backyard and I came across this: It's not rare or anything but one hardly expects to find a 50 cal. shell casing hanging out with the earth worms. The bungalow l live in was likely built in the 1940s or early 1950s. I suspect...
