NP 0-6-0 number 924 (Rogers, 1899) steamed for the public for the first time at Snoqualmie, WA for their "railroad days" event this past Saturday.
She needs more work and some paint, but she seemed to be steaming pretty well.
I took these shots there:
FYI, No photoshop was used in this...
Got these today from eBay. Those ashtrays were used in the 40s, though I'm not sure if spitoons were used that late. Does anyone know?
This is for my model railroad layout which takes place in the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1943.
I mean, this is the area where people were still using outhouses...
I'm in the process of scratch building a country store for my model railroad layout. I already have, on order, a kit for one of the prewar gas pumps, the one with the big glass visible ball at the top.
I was looking at photographs of similar stores, and I can't find an example where there is...
I saw this excellent photo on the D-Day 75th thread posted here: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/75th-anniversary-of-operation-overlord-d-day.96302/page-2#post-2556623
Great impressions!
But it got me wondering, as the French police during the occupation surely had to sometimes enforce...
In the Our Gang serial, "Hi Neighbor," we see one of the sweetest rides a kid could have ever had:
It didn't look like a pedal car that I could tell.
Does anyone know if this was a studio creation or something a uber-rich kid could have had their parents buy back then?
I'm not sure if I haven't asked this here already, but I've done a lot of searching online and came up with nothing.
I'm looking for reproduction pre-war hawaiian shirts. Any pattern is fine. Most reproduction vintage patterns I see are form the post-VJ day 1940s or later. I have yet to find any...
I'll start with mine, which takes place in Eastern Tennessee in the summer of 1943.
It'll be in a magazine coming out any day now: http://on30annual.com/current-issue/
I have tried to find info on when chain link fences became common and how much so going into the WW2 era.
I can't find any period photos of them being used on Army bases during the war.
Anyone have any hard data either way?
My dad tells me that when he was a young man in the 50s in Northeast Tennessee, the state would have trucks going up and down the roads during forest fire season and they'd just pick you up (with your own shovel). One year, he hopped into a truck with paratroopers from Ft Bragg called out for...
Does anyone have any idea how strong the efforts were to bust up moonshine stills in the US during the war? Did the Feds just put that on the backburner for the duration to focus on more important stuff?
I can't find any historical references to moonshining between the end of the depression and...
I'm on the downhill side of my model railroad layout build, and the layout takes place in 1943. I was given a hobo figure and I decided to just place it on the front porch of a log cabin so it looks like a hillbilly farmer, instead.
But it got me wondering, how common were hobos, homeless and...
http://tank-photographs.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/german-tiger-1-tank-replica.html
This Tiger was built for a movie, and for the life of me I can't recall the title. I'd read about in a magazine years ago, I think it was called, "______'s circus" but can't be 100% sure and don't recall...
I am putting some power poles on my O scale model RR layout and am doing them each with a single crossarm with one insulator on each side.
My questions are this for anyone who really knows an answer"
What color of insulators was common then? Were green ones even used in the late 30s and early...
The EVA before Christmas
-By Lee Bishop
T’was the EVA before Christmas and up on the Moon,
The mission near ending, I thought much too soon;
The suits just then stowed for a long lunar nap,
When at the main hatch, we both heard a loud tap;
Outside the window there seemed clouds of smoke,
I...
A very young guy in my WW2 living history group and another local collector I knew were both killed in the second guy’s restored WW2 tank destroyer. They were firing live rounds out of the main gun: http://www.ktvz.com/news/explosion-in-tank-east-of-bend-injures-2-possible-fatality/36082806
The...
These were taken at a airfield near my home. The bird is the CAF's B-17G "Sentimental Journey".
Everyone else was at the South end of the field, but the CAF never launched or landed at that direction. The North end of the field has no fence and has a tall berm overlooking the overrun. Made for...
Does anyone know of a good-quality DVD that has all of the unedited Little Rascals shorts? I trolled Amazon and the reviews either state that the quality of supposedly complete sets (some are mentioned as incomplete) are terrible or they aren't complete.
Looking for a good set.
I'm badly trying to find a good photo of a Pet Ice Cream (or milk) sign from the pre-war era. Pet was (and still is) a dairy outfit mostly out of the Southeast (but not as far South as the Gulf coast). They were a big thing in the area my parents grew up in, in Northeast Tennessee, as there was...
Does anyone here have any idea what color and markings would be on a Tennessee State Patrol car during the WW2 era?
I've tried several internet searches, have emailed the TN state museum, the State Patrol and even some private website contacts for police collecting, but nobody seems to have a...
Just got this yesterday in the mail from an eBay listing. It’s 1300 pages long and has pretty much anything you can imagine going on with steam and diesel locomotives in that year. Thousands of photos and technical drawings of part of and whole locomotives…
Kalmbach reprinted this in 1971 and...
