So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Living in Pasadena, TX, a few blocks from Gilley's, it was indeed a crazy time. The thing that strikes me most now about the cowboy "style" at the time was how contrived, uncomfortable, and completely unauthentic it was.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

A brouhaha is just like a donnybrook or a hubbub that doesnt' quite escalate into a rhubarb where you might see haymakers and slobberknockers.

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Another music legend gone, this time a big one in the world of country music: Merle Haggard died today, his 79th birthday.

One could also check out How The Other Half Lives by Jacob Riis. It will certainly give some perspective on that "refined" social life of many.

Anyone else interested in the ancient world?

I studied Viking history a bit in college. Not really what you'd call a "classical period", though certainly interesting history.

While I'm sure that's tasty, I want fresh berries, not cooked ones.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Catawampus (or cattywampus) is a great word. One should try to work it in whenever possible. Another great Southern word is "fixinto", as in "I'm fixinto go to the store", or more often "I'm fixinto whip your ass."

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

In the US, we would call those "boxer-briefs", which refers to the style, not the material or the fit. It's a hybrid between the tight fit of briefs and the longer length of boxers. It doesn't matter if they're made of edible seaweed, the style is "boxer-brief". I'm not sure what a...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

We pay fuel taxes here too, per gallon, not per dollar spent. It's not 70%, but it's not insignificant either. The federal tax is $0.184/gallon, and the state rate varies, all the way from $0.12/gallon in Alaska to over $0.50/gallon in Pennsylvania. So if gas were say $2.00/gallon in PA...

    The Dessert Menu

I'm just pointing this out because the above picture reminded me, but...the strawberries this year have been absolute crap. They look like a million bucks, and they taste like a nickel. And it's mid-season!

    What's for Dinner?

Holy cow...there's been a Brother Axley sighting. Good to see you. I have nothing to add, other than I had some leftover pasta for supper.

    The Origin Of "The Fifties"

I remember a Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad why old photographs were all black and white, and didn't they have color film back in the day. His dad tells him that everything used to be black and white and the world didn't turn color until the mid 30s. Calvin is trying to...

Who got the oldest computer-contest! ;-)

I'm not working on it now, but I have one of these: I think it has 512K of memory and a 20MB hard drive.

    The Dessert Menu

Mrs. Hawk and I had a discussion this morning about Easter treats, after she came home with a giant Reese's Peanut Butter egg. She absolutely hates the Cadbury eggs, almost as bad as she hates marshmallow peeps. Personally, I loved the Cadbury eggs, but now they are too sweet for me, so I...

You know you are getting old when:

I may have mentioned this before, but one of my ex fiancé's had a letter than her great grandmother wrote her when she (my ex) was a toddler and her GGmother was I'd guess 90 or so (this would have been early 60s). The letter talked about all the things she (GGmother) had witnessed in her...

Or my Aunt Kate. At least she had the good manners to wait until *after* church to weave her color.

You know you are getting old when:

It's been the opposite for me. In my 20s, the 40-something women were all over me. Now that I'm in my late 40s, it's the 20 year olds. Must be the hats.
