I've been looking for tap pants in cotton, or at least a cotton blend. They're out there, and they're much more affordable than those gorgeous silk ones, but I guess they're also a bit granny-ish. I'm getting a couple of pairs of these, and I plan to sew some lace trim to the hem to pretty...
I thought I'd resurrect this thread because I find Miss Joeri's way of life, and her philosophy, so inspiring. I'm passionately fond of the music, furniture, clothing, movies, and ... well, let's say deportment of the 1930s and 1940s. I've felt this way since I was in my teens, but it's only...
If you folks ever get together in Boston, I hope I get to hear about it. I'm homesick for the brine of the Atlantic Ocean. I still have friends there and could be talked into saving my pennies for a trip back east. (I moved to St. Louis for my job.)
I understand Miss PrettySquareGal's dilemma...
Thanks, Chanteuse. Here's a 1930s image of a lady in a dark suit wearing pale gloves:
And here are some very matchy 1940s gloves:
A close look at the 1940s image shows the ladies wearing gloves that match their hats or purses (or both) -- and not their coats or dresses -- which leaves me...
I agree with Mr. Deckard. Until a couple of months ago, that would have been true of me, but I've reformed. I challenged myself to wear gloves every time I leave the house--unless I'm taking out the trash. Gloves make me feel so smart and pulled-together.
I have one question about colors...
Margo Rita, I agree wholeheartedly. I think going out in full-on mid-20th century clothing is a real education in the lives of women. I recently made an experiment to try out a more complete 1930s/1940s look on an overseas trip and realized that it took an immense amount of preparation...
Actually that is exactly how it turned out, Miss Lizzie. I knew I'd be walking everywhere, with a lot of luggage, because I was visiting London for several days before heading up to Newcastle for the conference. So I wore vintage-style Beautifeel shoes and sandals (these aren't the exact...

My sense is that the word "glamour" has changed a bit since the 1930s and 1940s. I've seen lots of etiquette and style manuals for young women that encouraged them to develop their own glamour. It seemed to have been considered an attainable goal, don't you think? Maybe they equated it more...
I'm glad this question came up. I'm relatively new to this forum, too, so I don't know whether it's been discussed before. I have searched a bit but haven't found an overall discussion on the rewards and pitfalls of recreating a vintage life. Like many people here, I feel very much at home in...
Checking in: three days to go. I'm so glad I tested these "challenges," because some worked beautifully and others not so much. I love wearing gloves; they make me feel so smart and sophisticated. The seamed stockings were another hit. Everyone who noticed them liked them. Wearing them...
I have a Crepe Suzette 1476, from Orchard Corset. I love it. It's comfortable, has excellent control, wears well, and takes inches off without bunching or creeping. I like it so much I'm about to order another one in black. They're on sale right now for under $20. Highly recommended.
I find a lot of vintage bath products on evil-bay. I found an unopened tin of Crepe de Chine powdered bubble bath for about $2.00. Crepe de Chine is a wonderful vintage fragrance that was at its height some time in the 1930s. I think it went out of production in the late 1960s. It's also...
