I seem to be answering myself. Not that unusual for me.
Anyway, here's a photo of my Christmas tree. You can see that among all the lovely presents are two pairs of shoes from Vintage Sole (far left.) Yes, yes, I gave those to myself.
That's real lead tinsel, by the way.
I have an advent calendar now -- I get one every year. When I was a child we had an advent wreath and lit the candles in the proper order, sang carols and prayed each Sunday before Christmas. I was an army brat, so my mother (who was German) taught us her customs. That also included St...
A bottle of the original Coty Chypre perfume, dating to the late 1920s or early 1930s. I would die of joy. The re-issue from the 1980s occasionally pops up on the 'bay and always shoots up into the stratosphere of un-affordability. And while the re-issue is a nice perfume, it isn't a patch on...
Tonyb, you fresh thing, a lady never reveals her age! Let's just say that I was in that first wave of people who started wearing 1930s clothes. That may or may not give you an idea. I didn't realize that was supposed to be a "thing" (or maybe it wasn't a "thing" back then) but when I found a...
Interesting, LizzieMaine and tonyb. When I was a teenager "vintage" specifically meant, 1930s and 1940s, and that's how I still think of the word today. I think now it has taken on a different meaning--anything and everything is vintage. I guess it's at least better than calling everything...
I'll send you one! Seriously, I'm making 1930s and 1940s Christmas cards from vintage images I photocopied, and I am willing to send one to any F-Lounger who is willing to reciprocate.
This reminds me of the wooden escalators that have pretty much vanished now. Back when I lived in Boston, the "T" (subway) had one last wooden escalator downtown. When I moved to St. Louis a few years ago, the old Famous Barr department store had one wooden escalator going to its top floor...
Maybe b/c it acclimates your body to the colder house temperature? Interesting suggestion.
Thanks for the link to the socks! These long ribbed wool socks look like they'd do the job perfectly. I've tried wool tights in the past, but they wore out very quickly (from chafing) so I think wool...
Thanks! I like the idea of a flannel slip. I have several good vintage patterns that should work. This may be a dumb question, but do you wear the flannel side toward the skin? I'm wondering whether a flannel slip would make the dress bunch & ride up?
So is the consensus that you'd still...
I got a lot of ideas for decorating my home for Christmas from my favorite Christmas movies. In Holiday Affair (1949) the heroine's in-laws have strung all their Christmas cards in a thick garland across their mantel. For me, 1949 is just about the tail end of my favorite period, but since the...
For those who wear vintage all the time, what do you wear around the house in the winter? I've decided that this winter I want to wear vintage at home, not just at the office or to go out. But I'm a bit stumped.
During the summer I usually wear a vintage cotton dress or skirt with a blouse...
Oh, really? I'm so pleased to know that Mr. Hanks likes this machine! I've seen the SC Silent typewriters from the mid-fifties and find them very attractive too, but I was delighted to find an earlier model. I'm really enjoying typing on it and want to practice to become better.
To answer...
I finally bought a Smith Corona Silent portable typewriter that I've been coveting for a long time. The shop had a 30% off sale so I treated myself. It's exactly like this one or this one. This site also seems to sell ribbons for it. The machine appears to be almost unused. It's in fantastic...
Shangas, I think you can buy good repros at the Vermont Country Store. I love glass ornaments too, and I particularly love real tinsel. I found some online last year, I think from a German site. When I was growing up, my grandmother had real candles lit on her Christmas tree. That was...
It doesn't seem egotistical at all. In fact, I've always thought you should write a book: a "how-to" manual for other neo-traditionalists (or whatever we're called!)
I do learn a great deal on this forum, but I have to ask specific questions and dig through many old threads. It would be great...
Thanks, Shangas. I've been reading your blog--so informative & fantastically interesting! It inspired me to look for a portable typewriter. I saw one in a local thrift shop. The tag indicated that it's 1940s; is there a source that will help me figure out whether it really is from the 40s?
