Speaking of sewing machines: a charity thrift store near me has a cute little "Apartment" brand sewing machine, with cabinet, for sale for $75. The manager doesn't know whether the machine works and is unwilling to try it for fear of blowing a fuse. Here's a link to a similar machine, though...
Wow, what do you know? The Clinic Coquettes are (were) made right here in Missouri. I found them on sale for about $89 on a couple of sites. That seems very reasonable for a nice-looking well made shoe. I just sent for a pair. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks so much for the kind words! The couch and chair (I didn't know it was called a lounge suite!) came from Craig's List. It had been stored in an empty house & hadn't been used in decades. Most of the rest of the wooden pieces came from flea markets or thrift shops or Ye Olde Dumpster.
I...
I can see why this is your favorite room! So interesting & comfortable at the same time. Must be a great place to visit with friends.
Here are a few images of my living room, which is where I spend most of my time when I'm not working. It's a good thing you can't see the cat hair ....!
I must say, just the fact that this is being taken so seriously--by the moderators, the site owners, the women on the forum, and 93 percent (guessing at the number) of the men encourages me to consider posting more widely. This is just terrific. Thanks to all who are taking so much time and...
I've been looking everywhere for a plain walking oxford with a relatively low heel and a decent vintage look. These Amerimark oxfords are just about perfect, but they're made of urethane. I can imagine they wouldn't last long and might be uncomfortably hot in the summer. Otherwise I'd be all...
I agree that many of the photos and questions men have posted here have been quite useful and interesting. For that reason alone I'd be sorry to see all areas of the powder room closed to all men. Unfortunately, those specific threads are also the ones that are frequently enlivened by...
Okay, this is cheating. I know. Doesn't quite fit with my ongoing effort to live the golden era in every possible way. So sue me. When I'm in a hurry and I really want a pin curl set, I dampen down my hair, comb through setting lotion, and just set the hair around the face and at the ends with...
The best recipe for getting out of any kind of a rut, whether sewing, knitting, or gardening, is to find a couple of like-minded people to join in the fun. I've never knitted or sewed so much as when I've had "bees" or knit-alongs. Okay, so a gardening bee wouldn't quite work, but my...
I feel exactly the same way, Amy Jeanne. I may love the thirties ruffled and bowed look on younger gals, but on me it would be mutton dressed as lamb.
I pretty much focus on the 1930s and 40s in all my clothes, so I'm not tempted to wear later decades, but I would look as awful in 1960s shifts...
After years of searching for a red lipstick that looks appropriate for the late 1930s and early 1940s, yet does not make me look like a circus clown pretending to be a pin-up, I think I've narrowed down my favorite choices (in no particular order):
-- As someone else said earlier, Maybelline...
I just had a 1939 party here a couple of weeks ago. I think the most important thing is the music. I played records, but also have a CD player hidden inside a repop radio. I paid a neighborhood kid to keep the music coming all evening, and I'm convinced that was the main ingredient to creating...
Shangas, I love the name-seal.
Shadomega, very well said. That's exactly the reason I use old stuff. I'm not handy like Lizzie M., in fact I'm dangerous around any tool more complicated than a rock or a potato, but there's an indescribable sense of ... hmm, now I'm going to try to describe it...
People use them as finch feeders (for thistle seed.) I've never had any luck with that, but it's possible that I gave up too soon. Birds usually need two or three days to discover a new food source. Personally I think the mesh is too small to allow the birds to get a good grip on the seeds.
I thought I might chime in here; I still really love reading this forum, but after one unpleasant encounter I stopped feeling comfortable posting in some of the threads. I guess I'd like to say that there is a significant difference between being openly insulted, bullied, or threatened, and...
Oh, hands down, the monitor! Sheeplady, what are you doing with the current fridge (I assume you own a modern one?)
This is now the main dilemma of my "retrofit" project. The only rooms in the house that are still mostly modern are the kitchen and bathroom. I am agonizing about the decision to...
If I may, I'd love to get back to Mr. Fibber's post. The reason I came to the Lounge in the first place is to discover whether there were other people out there interested in the same eccentric idea I had -- to recreate a golden era life. As it happens I'm also interested in the early 1940s...
That's what happened to mine, too, Shangas. I gather it's the thermostat. I looked into having it repaired & as happens with so many other modern appliances, discovered that it wouldn't be affordable or safe to do so. Like Sheeplady I decided to try to live without it for a couple of months and...
Since this thread started my microwave has left this earthly plane, and so has my air-popcorn-popper. I find I don't miss them. I heat things up in enamelware on the stove and bleach or launder my dishrags. I used to disinfect them in the MW. I've gone back to popping corn on the stove top...
