Does anyone remember that last year we talked about exchanging vintage Christmas cards? Some folks liked the idea, but felt that we didn't have enough time to organize such an exchange. I seem to remember that it came up in the middle of December. If I recall correctly, people said they'd be...
I'm in the planning stages for a new Christmas outfit. Nothing too dressy--I plan to spend Christmas at home--just a nice warm woolen dress made from an early 1940s (or possibly late 1930s) pattern.
Anyone interested in a sew-along?
Even if you're not thinking of making a new Christmas...
Oh, I find this look immensely charming! I didn't know about this designer, so thank you for posting. This look reminds me strongly of Krista Larson, Cynthia Ashby and Rundholz. Now I don't mean this in any kind of catty way, but about ten or twelve years ago I would have died over these...
Ah, candidates for the Museum of Bad Art.
For me: mean people, whether in the flesh, via the T.V., or the internet. Particularly people who think it's clever or interesting to be mean -- there's no sane way of coping with them.
Seriously, though, I agree with the poster a page or two back...
I agree with everyone here, particularly Miss Sis. The trick is to find the right skirt shape. Starting in the early thirties, there are some interesting asymmetrical seam lines that would be very flattering. In the later thirties, a nice tailored or pleated skirt would look great on you. I...
Sorry, couldn't resist. I did not mean that in a naughty way, actually.
I'm working on a project to turn all my various bureau, desk, night-stand, vanity, and sewing table drawers into authentic Golden Age drawers. So, if someone went snooping in my home and opened any of those drawers, I...
Every house on my street was built in 1929. In my neighborhood, in fact, there are rows & rows of late 20s and early 30s bungalows, though I think they're all much smaller than this one ( I live in south St. Louis.)
These photos are wonderful & very inspiring -- thanks so much for posting...
Good point, Renaissancemedici! I agree that thinking about what an average woman would have worn during the late 30s and early 40s is the best possible way to go. I.e., at my job, any hint of "bombshell" would be highly inappropriate (not to mention the fact that I'd be mutton dressed as lamb.)...
Over the past few years I've slowly been migrating to a late 1930s wardrobe, and incidentally in my home as well (1930s dishes, cookware, waffle iron, electric clothes iron, phones, typewriter, and so on.) It does help to be able to sew skirts and dresses, though I tend to look for the tailored...
Sacred, from what I've been able to tell in my lurking here, most of the ladies on the Lounge mix eras, as well as vintage with modern.
I'm glad this thread was bumped up, though, because lately I've been getting into more vintage sewing and have been really wondering about hem lengths. I...
I get comments all the time, mostly because I always dress á la 1930s or 1940s, but since I've reached the age of reason (= old enough to lie about my age) the comments are all positive. I've adopted the hausfrau frump look, since I don't think I could pull off a pin-up or movie star thing, so...
My goodness. I had no idea gentlemen here felt such a strong distaste for persons of the female persuasion. I am astonished and saddened.
I really have nothing more to add, nor, evidently, would I be welcome to do so.
I agree with all of the above. I'm originally from New Jersey, for what it's worth. But I was actually referring less to swearing and more to suggestive remarks in inappropriate settings, such as the work place. Point taken, regarding crass / loud women who want to prove they're as hip as their...
My neighbor just poked her head out her back door and observed that my yard needed a good raking. Sigh.
Anyway, it was good for a vintage-feeling-moment ...
Yes, that interpretation is spot on. I would never have known that it wasn't knitted directly from a pattern!
I have a question for the knitters here: I'm looking for a mid-1930s to early-1940s cardigan pattern. I know there are a ton of them out there (I have quite a few) but I want to knit...
I used to work in a hat factory. You'll need a big blast of steam, some sizing, and a hat block. You will also need a warm oven.
If you don't have a block, try to find a small saucepan that has about the right size and shape. I don't know whether a clothes steamer would give you enough...
Does anyone know how to fill a fountain pen? I only own the kind that takes cartridges but would love to find a nice one from the 1930s that fills up with ink.
Would anyone know how to tell whether a particular pen works, short of trying it out? Thanks!
I miss the smell of burning leaves in autumn. It's against the law in St. Louis.
I also miss the days when grown men didn't feel the need (or the sense of entitlement) to make off-color remarks around their female coworkers. I believe at one time gentlemen refrained from making suggestive...
Here's an ebay auction for a portable washing machine. Fascinating! I wish I could afford it.
