I’d only go down that route if I was getting 5* to clone a jacket that I’d physically sent them. I invested a lot in materials for a custom G-1 and the hide was the only part they were supplying. I sent measurements from a Star Sportswear G-1, my sourced zipper, mouton, lining, knits etc and...
Absolutely a crapshoot going custom, Trucker jacket they cloned from denim to leather worked out well. I sent them a jacket that fitted great and the clone measured exactly the same within a couple of millimetres.
Getting a jacket cloned was fine but my customs from 5* didn’t work out. Wouldn’t go that route again but would confidently send them another to clone.
I wear all sorts when riding from CR to leather Trucker to A-2, generally I’ll have kevlar type armoured vest and leggings worn under my more casual top layers & urban styled riding boots.
I’d check with 5* about how well the dye is ‘fixed’ ordered a tan suede Trucker which ended up in the bin because it bled over everything. Brush my hand over it and it came away orange. Had more luck with one in black deerskin but had to send that back because it left black residue (nowhere near...
If I could have only one jacket it would be a decent A-2 ….. I currently own two from ELC. Great in summer with a T and lightly layered on chilly days, wore one of mine whilst out and about in W.London yesterday. Simple classic and practical is my view of the A-2 & have lived in them at times...
They certainly have their market, last time I was there I recollect looking at jackets ordered by Tom Cruise and think another was Spielberg’s. I can’t justify regular purchases anymore. Last buy was an A-2 about 3 years ago when I cashed in a pension
D-1 design allows for light layering given its design, might be worth giving ELC a ring, I was dead keen on a B-3 & visited their Devon show room. Left having ordered a second A-2 (living in an A-2 at the time), think they mentioned a lighter Anj contract that might have worked for me.
Had an ELC Irvin type that I used to put on back to front to sleep in during the winter when staying in friends houses with zero heating … nothing to do with break in & all about avoiding hypo thermia.
Traded my ELC Irvin type in (too hot) and purchased a D-1 from them …. Found the D-1 much more practical for South Western UK …. but I run hot. If I had a spare £1500 I’d pick up the fly weight ELC RAF shearling
