Ok, Ok! You talked me out of selling it :) In the end, seller’s remorse can be tough. I am going to hang on to this one and resolve to wear it more this year.
I bought this jacket from a local secondhand shop. I’m not wearing it enough, so I thought I would see if I could pass it on. The lining is printed with the Schott logo. There are belt loops, but no belt. The zips and snaps all work. It is tag size 44. $300 PPFF plus shipping in lower 48 states...
I bought this jacket from the FL classifieds a couple of years ago. I am just not wearing it enough, so I thought I would try to pass it on. The tag size is 40, but I think it is a bit larger than that, see measurements below. YKK main and sleeve zips all work. The hand warmer pockets are...
Hi Everyone,
Posting here in hopes of getting some expert input from those who have posted already. I have reached the point in this hobby that I decided to take the plunge and order a custom Columbia. I tried on some of the standard sizes in the shop, and none had the right combo of shoulder...
I found a pretty good article (semi-technical) on tanning from the EPA.
https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2020-10/documents/c9s15.pdf
It has a pretty good description of the process. I understand better what people mean when they say fat-liquoring. It also seems like effective conditioning...
Obenauf’s oil is the only thing I have had success with (other than lots of time hanging in the sun and fresh air) to reduce a musty or old smell in a vintage jacket. It has a pleasant scent that seems to stick around in the leather. Don’t expect miracles, though. In my experience, it did not...
Thanks for the additional information. The boots do look just like the 2268 Engineer style. They still had the tags attached (and in English), so I don’t think it was a non-US style designation. In any case, they are a nice pair of boots. I’m getting on with the break-in. Ironically, the...
Hi Everyone,
I picked up a pair of Red Wing Engineer boots with the style number 25416 at our local charity shop yesterday. I can date them to sometime between 1983 and 1991 based on the ANSI tag for their reinforced toe. Other than that, internet searches are turning up zilch. Anyone know any...
San Diego Leather did a good job on my thrift store find G-1. There were some extra stitch lines and other aspects, so I might not send a collectible jacket to them. They did a good job for an everyday wear jacket, though.
This is a newspaper ad (November 1983) indicating that at least the 1983-1984 era custom work from Taste of Leather came from Taubers.
The Taubers “Chips” ad shows up repeatedly in the same paper in Oct-Nov 1984.
The jacket in the link looks similar to another Taste of Leather jacket that I have.
The size tag label looks like the one in the linked post, but the address for Taste of Leather is on Folsom St.
I think it is an earlier address for the business, using Terry’s useful idea of checking...
This ad opens up whole new worlds of possibility! I always assumed that the Castro/Folsom leather shops like Taste of Leather and Image Leather made their own jackets or got them from Johnson Leathers in SF. Some jackets have a secondary tag that looks like JL’s tag, but some do not. Taubers as...
I tried these on when the guys came down from Sacramento to Oakland for a vintage clothing event. They are pretty cool pants. No lining. They were also a generous fit while I was wearing shorts (I have a 34” waist). They would likely make a good pair of over pants for riding. The leather was...
I really like Just Leather’s older work from the 1970s with the gold and black label. Their brick and mortar shop closed during the pandemic. I think their work is often undervalued and worth looking out for.
I am thinking about fiddling with the snaps on this collar to try for a better fit to the jacket. It seems low risk, because I would only mess up the collar, not the jacket. All the snaps would be hidden when the collar is attached. Anyone attempted to do this before?
