Don't forget solicitors Son of Atropos!
And welcome to the Observation Bar Association!
When I teach ethics I promote 4 fundamental principles that sum up every conduct rule - they are Fidelity, Honesty, Propriety and Competency. These are the 4 things thast drive our duties to Court...
True enough Brad. Stetson, and I imagine most of the major manufacturers used branded tags. This one is generic perhaps indicating a small hatmaker. But I guess this is a forelorne search. We will never know where it came from.
The question is - can we rebuild it?!
And that tight brim curl...
Torps, you are one sharp looking guy for sure. Love that look; love that Dobbs; love that maroon band! Just love that photo really - and Laura's a peach!
Brad, as always you're a wealth of helpful information. many thanks for all that.
So it is possible that this old Derby of mine is an early Dobbs? Do any of your old Dobbs' have a size tag like this one? As for the wire under the brim, I'll have a look when I get home and let you know.
Yes...
It's very precariously perched there Sue.
If I replace the sweat and have it restored I'd like to have a sweat that at least resembles the old ones from this period. Does anyone do this?
Talk about your fixer upper
I bought this hat mainly for the box it came in (see the Hatbox Homage thread). This Derby is of unknown origin. With no liner and no sweatband we have no idea of the manufacturer. If anyone recognises the style of the size tag, then let me know. But realistically...
That Old Dobbs box has arrived
Yep, it was delivered today. Apart from the rip in the lid it's in pretty good shape for a box that originated in the early years of the Dobbs factory. It appears to be made of some kind of papier mache and is very thick and solid. The lettering and shield on both...
Welcome aboard Orion! Congratulations on your admission. Pull up a chair. The folks around here are a friendly lot - for lawyers! We also have a few paralegals, of course, and one or two who just pop in because they like the company.
What area of law are you hoping to get into?
And...
Many thanks Sue,
Now that it fits perfectly, I've grown very fond of this old panama. It will be getting lots of work this summer.
Now...how about posting some pics in here of those hat boxes of yours? We don't yet have one of that double Borsalino box you picked up recently!
Man, now you're really teasing me. What a gorgeous guitar! Now I need to get my Maton out and do dueling photos with you.
Love the look and the Dobbs too - as always.
Bloody Hell Torp! We're talking about Sydney here, not the civilised shores of Franco's fair land! Think Texas - but with a social conscience.
Wearing a boater here would at best leave you exposed to ridicule and at worst exposed to a flogging. Definitely not for any businessperson who wants...
Selvaggio,
Nothing at all wrong with those straws my friend. They'd do Tony Greig proud! Slap 'em on your melon and walk tall.
No I didn't buy the Stetson here but from an elderly lady in the US. It belonged to her father. I do, however, have a modern Akubra Balmoral straw that I wear...
G'day Rusty - it's probably something to do with that thin ribbon!
I bought it a few months back and when it arrived it turned out to be a size 7. It's been slow progress stretching it to 7 1/4, but we got there with no ill effects. It seems a little steam and a lot of patience can even bend...
I know we're not meant to mention current auctions...but
I seriously doubt we could drive this price higher...

Old Stetson
The Stetson Panama I wore today is housed in this much older Stetson box. It's a very plain box with lettering that reminds me of a deco influence but with nothing of the deco flamboyance. The logo is the pre 50's logo and I'm guessing this box belongs somewhere in the 30's or 40's...
Don't put the Panama Canal into storage just yet
Summer has just arrived Downunder so I donned my 1950's (my best guess) vintage Stetson "Genuine Panama". It's a very fine weave and would have been an expensive lid in its day. This one is going to be a summer favourite.
Brim 2 5/8
Crown 4...
Pick the Stetson
ok...it's a trick question. There's two Stetsons in this photo.
Just as you northern dwellers are stuffing your panamas in storage, we who dwell on the earth's bum are pulling ours out. Today being the first day of summer Downunder I donned my (I think 1950's) Stetson Panama...
I have two. One is a modern Akubra Balmoral with thin leather hat band. Fantastic hemp straw hat.
The one I'm wearing today (which I'll post a pic of later in the 'What Hat Are Your Wearing' thread) is a 50's Stetson genuine Panama with thin black ribbon. Both are 'natural' colour and both...
