In the '50s there were plenty of folks in rural areas who were living much as they did during the '20s. Come to think of it, there are folks today in rural communities (Hemet, California comes to mind) who live as if it's still the 1980s. :)
Take it as a whole package. The storyline ain't brilliant ... but it's clever, poignant, at times even lyrical, and always relevant to the overarching theme: silent film, what it was and what became of it.
You bet. With all the thousands of old threads around here, it can be hard to find the one that's related to your interest. That's what old timers like me are for: we dinosaurs remember when those long-buried old threads were new, and we dig 'em out. :)
I think the phrase above in light blue is imprecise. California collars were made with stands (and collar stays!) for dress shirts; they were also made without stands for sport shirts and work shirts. (I've seen both types in person.) The fact that the collar style was "California" did not...

Here's the short and sweet of it.
Barrymore collar: like the "Duke" collar being made by ReVamp. About 4 inches long.
Hollywood collar: looks just like the Barrymore collar, but longer. About 4 1/2 inches long, and sometimes even longer.
California collar: looks more spread and fatter...
