Great info, Lizzie. I've also been looking at ads for old radios and dreaming of a day when I can actually own one.
Unfortunately, there's not a lot of hope in finding those old batteries. I'm fairly certain you can't find "A" or "B" batteries (not to be confused with A cell or B cell...both...
As far as I'm concerned, you reap what you sew - H. Florsheim was greedy and sold out. Thus, the company lived a short while with some decent sales before the curse ruined them altogether.
I had to shake my head when I read this line from Thomas, Sr., “We don’t think we’re Gucci, but our...
Thought it would be nice to bump this in case anyone else has this question.
I've been doing this hairstyle for about a year and I find it quite rewarding. It fits my face well and it's relatively easy to maintain. I typically use Murray's Super Light pomade which lasts about 1...
Here's a pic I've lifted from the London Lounge. Alistair Sinclair, UK Air Minister in 1941. Notice the 6-button DB vest with what appears to be a shawl collar. In any case, the collar of the vest and jacket do not match. (I'm still looking through my scans, in the meantime. ;))
I've seen a similar combination in semi-formal wear from the 20's and 30's; i.e. peak lapel, 1 button jacket with no vent, flat front trousers w/no cuff, low cut vest with 4-5 buttons and shawl lapels. Of course that was "informal" evening wear of the 20's, and "semi-formal" evening wear of the...
First point, yes, if my friend/family wished the funeral were held at a tropical resort hotel and that everyone where banana hats, and that we shoot his/her ashes out of a cannon into a truck full of jell-o, I would be happy to observe said wishes. But if no such wishes existed, I would use my...
I am with you most of the way on this, but my only divergence is that in some instances I think one SHOULD walk into Brooks Bros. and purchase the suit; not for instant respectability, but for instant homogeny. It's one thing if a guy can't afford the suit (or can't justify its purchase), it's...
...yeah...except brown and navy go together well.
This is an age old (or at least intrawebz Fedora Lounge age-old) argument that can be found beaten to death in previous threads.
Typically, a man should not mix brown and black, or navy and black, in suiting. Brown/navy, cordovan/navy, etc...
I'm sure we're all making the connection that most Western societies are, in fact, free to wear what they like 99% of the time. I don't think anyone in this thread, or probably very many folks in Western Society, would advocate civil/criminal punishment for not adhereing to some arbitrary dress...
See, I think it's acceptable when people try to dress up (and fail) versus people who either don't try, or who think it's okay to flaunt the rules.
If a young man goes to Acme Formal Wear and asks the salesman to fit him in a great tux for his wedding, can the young man be blamed if he ends...
Does anyone have a source for silk/cotton/rayon (not necessarily blended) Grosgrain FABRIC?
I'm not interested in ribbon, just looking for a bit of fabric for a waistcoat's lapels. Any leads would be fantastic!
Three things to think about: first - temperature. Second - material on your head. Third - ventilation. If you're wearing a heavy fur felt with no ventilation and it's 90 degrees, yes, you're going to sweat.
In any case, yes, many hat wearing folks on this board will wear a fur felt in the...

Hat Drenched, Ruined?
The above links may have an answer, or may at least help. :)
This is very true. Poly and other synthetics are useless in replacing hat ribbons. I have tried - I have failed. lol
You want a cotton/rayon blend, as this is what's typically used for proper hat bands. Unfortunately, most retailers I've seen, including wholesale fabric warehouses, Wal-Mart...
Have you been to your local fabric store? Or maybe even Wal-Mart? Grosgrain is fairly easy to find, and if you're not picky about size/fabric, you should be able to get some quite inexpensively.
