    Reproduction classic workwear

. Went for the first time to the MISTER FREEDOM store on Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles. Mind-bogglingly great. Best selection of vintage French 1920s-'50s menswear I've ever seen -- and most of it is deadstock with tags. Plenty of deadstock spearpoint collar shirts (at $300+), which --I'm...

    This or That

Bill Handel forever! John & Ken on some issues: down with the high-speed train initiative to San Francisco, a scheme that would have made Robert Moses proud (except that he would have been crafty enough to get away with it!) Beer in the bottle or beer on tap?

Men's DRESS BOOTS to suit all budgets.

As you might know, Stacy Adams makes a similar-looking one, but its quality is not very high.

Men's DRESS BOOTS to suit all budgets.

True. Odd (meaning unsold) sizes tend to be below 8 or above 12.

Men's DRESS BOOTS to suit all budgets.

Some oddly-sized deadstock ones might now show up on eBay.

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

. Wow, John in Covina! Were you working there when Robert Moses was still in charge? The Toll Authority treated him like a god.

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

. Ah, I see! Thanks! Here's some more information on Guy Lombardo and the Jones Beach Marine Theater: "The wooden Jones Beach Marine Theater was erected by Robert Moses, New York's so-called 'Master Builder', in 1930 to present circuses, water shows and fireworks. It was rebuilt in 1952...

The Jones Beach Marine Theater, on Long Island? That was "the house that Robert Moses built".

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

Yeah, I'm long enough in the tooth to remember when his band would play "Auld Lang Syne" at every Times Square New Year's Eve.

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

True. My only qualm with Lombardo is his (incredibly lucrative) business association with Robert Moses, the villain of "The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York". A small qualm, but still.

. In short, Mr. Welk was / is / will eternally be cool for a good chunk of good folks, so he doesn't especially belong in this thread about uncoolness. Guy Lombardo, anyone?

. Are you gents aware that the FL's bartenders hate these "Gone. Item is gone. Gone" and "Found. Found" threads? Just a warnin'.

    Waistcoat buttons and shirt studs

No: the opposite. The fixed-button black evening waistcoat was the standard in both America and Europe until the WWI era. Then, for reasons unknown to me, American black evening waistcoats --which formerly were made in the same wool fabrics as the tuxedos they were worn with-- began to be...

What do you think these tie widths are?

. I'd say 2 to 2 1/4 inches wide at their widest point.
