    Not sure if it counts as a "movie", but I just watched "Long Way Round". Ewan MacGregor and Charlie Berman ride "the loang way round" the world, crossing Europe, Asia and North America. Interesting stuff, especially the parts in rural Russia, Kazahkstan and Mongolia.

    They still work great. Many folks up here have a set on rims. Makes for easy changeovers from winter to summer. Driving on ice just takes proper equipment and care, and the willingness to wait for the sanding truck sometimes.

    Keep in mind the population, per capita numbers skew a bit when you are only dealing with 600,000 people. Aside from that, like everywhere else, studies in Alaska show us that violent crime concentrates among documented criminals and their associates; folks without involvement or associations...

    Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I don't expect to have to blow my nose every day (or help a lady with a makeup problem for that matter), but I carry a hanky with me all the time just in case.

    There's no such thing as a "gin hangover". Lime hangover? Yes. Ice hangover? Of course. Quinine hangover? Indubitedly. But gin, sweet sweet gin, that panacea for all that ails one? It is slander and heresy to ascribe anything so base as a hangover to such an elixer. :D

    We went from close to 20 below to the mid 40's a few days ago. We are having flooding as the iced over creeks overflow. Chinook winds and higher temps aren't unusual in january but this spread of temps has been huge. Fairbanks went from 60 below to similar high temps.
