My uncle moved to Australia back in the early 70's (back when a phone call was a scheduled event), and for years we had an idea that he was living in the Old West. HE was living rough (a long story), but we found out later that it was far from Dodge City. Certainly not what we envisioned:).
This is something I've never been able to wrap my mind around. There are obviously some very good cosmetic surgeons, especially in Hollywood. So why do these well-known (and presumably rich) actors and actresses not go to the best? I remember Melanie Griffith getting "work" done years ago, and...

Thanks for the links, it looks like the kind of murder that would be a media sensation. It seems that they weren't even "technically" lovers; I wonder if most of the affair wasn't in her mind.
I know some of y'all like Besame. If you're interested, they now have their 6 lipstick sampler available.

I know what you mean. I remember my grandmother having full dentures my entire life, I'm guessing she was in her late 40's or early 50's when she got them, but it could've been much earlier. My mom turns 68 tomorrow. I think the worst she has are a couple of fillings.
I was recently...
I noticed her too. She stuck out because she does look "modern", and she's actually a rather nice looking young woman.
Naturally, she's the bigamist in the lot!
What frightened me a tiny bit, was how "young" some of these women were. Unless I'm mistaken, some of them are apparently missing...
Ouch! Thanks for the heads up. It never crossed my mind that "G & G" could be worse.
Did I mention the bad Southern accents? The accents were atrocious. I've never heard anything even approaching a resemblance to those accents.
Oh, did I mention that I'm still bitter? :)
You weren't in a theater in New Mexico by any chance? ;) Because that was the exact same reaction that happened. We were all just so excited, and when the end came... I don't think there's a word in the English language to describe it. "I was supposed to have enjoyed that. Is it just me? Did...
I'd hope I was staying for a couple of years, but prepare like it was going to be a lifetime. When I'm just "vacationing" somewhere, I usually don't give much consideration to things like my reputation, resume, or social position. It's not that I behave like a frat boy on spring break in Cancun...
I suppose hanging on to Lizzie's skirt isn't an option? Darn. :)
On the one hand, I think I have a few skills that would enable me to make a legitimate living. OTOH...I'm not so sure as to stake my well-being on it. So, plunk my 21 year old butt down in Louisville, KY in April of 1938, the day...
Thank you for the links. I'm tempted to try and track down a copy of the travel guide for myself. He sounds like he would've been a great guy to know.
I thought it was interesting, the part about his detailer checking out his looks and bank account before sending him to a diplomatic posting...
I saw this in The Tennessean a couple of days ago. I was particularly intrigued by photo #9, since I live in that area. Those were some massive field exercises! I realize most of the area was farmland at the time (and still is), but it's strange to imagine a FX of that size in a fairly inhabited...
*Hummpf!*
Whoever said vanities were obsolete obviously didn't have a vision problem. I don't know how many things I tried to help me see myself as I did my makeup and hair. Sitting at my vanity table beats the heck out of sitting on top of the bathroom counter with my nose up against the mirror.
One unfortunate by product of cheaper, mass produced books was the introduction of wood pulp paper instead of linen/cotton rag paper. Since it wasn't recognized until the 1930s as a problem, there's a big chunk of books that deteriorate badly from those eras (mid-1800's-1950s and later). The...
"Undersea Warrior": the World War II Story of Mush Morton and the USS Wahoo". Actually a bit embarrassing, since I didn't realize it came out several months ago. A coworker was doing some work on it, and asked if I had seen it. I hadn't, but that was easily corrected at the company bookstore...
Help me out here. I thought I had seen references "somewhere" that pajamas were worn in public during the 20's -40's, and the above pictures seem to reinforce that idea that they were. But is there an overlap in terminology happening here? I know that "leisure suits" and "play suits" were being...
It's interesting that the reaction that we have to color film is the same as people "back then" had. The realism detracts from portraying them as evil caricatures. If I didn't know who the people in the pictures and film are, I'd think that it looked like a perfectly pleasant bunch of folks. The...
Clicking on the various links in the original article will take you to some more of the photos, but not to the entire collection. I'm wondering also about how many of them are going to be available.
The color does make them look recent, which they are in a way.70 years isn't what it used to be...
Apologies if this has been posted before.

The pics are from the late 30s/early 40s.
