high end vs low end products ?

Ouch! MAC = Chanel? Why do I see myself involved in a black market import business, smuggling cosmetics across international borders?

    The Doggy Bag

Good heavens no. It is not wrong to ask for a to-go box, regardless of the restaurant. I always joked that there was no way my dog was getting it. It was for me! Besides, some mid-range restaurants (you know who they are) do serve very large portions. It's nice to have my next lunch boxed and...

What do you do for Living?

I need glasses really bad!!! what do 1920's womens glasses look like???????????

If you decide to go with the period style specs, make sure the lens' you get aren't "too" small. Probably not a big deal if your vision isn't too awful. But if you're heading into major near-sightedness, it can be a pain to have a small field of vision.

    Cologne and perfume

Is there a particular "style" of fragrance you like? Oriental (spicy), floral, woodsy, leather, chypre? Decisions, decisions :) If you don't really have an idea of which direction to go, I'd suggest the "classic" perfume houses. Guerlain, Estee Lauder, and Chanel. Most major department stores...

Did men stay at home longer in the Golden Era?

In the 1940 census, my 24 yr. old great-uncle was living at home, and I believe was making a good income at the time. Did my great-grandparents need some financial assistance? Possibly. But I think living by yourself back then probably wasn't seen as all that desirable. I don't envision living...

Restoring my Grandmother's Singer Sewing Machine

Fortunately Granny had it serviced regularly over 50+ years. She was also the only owner. AND my granddad had great mechanical skills. So it has been fairly well maintained. Which is a good thing, because it was in constant use for clothes and household stuff (curtains, pillows, doll clothes :)...

Restoring my Grandmother's Singer Sewing Machine

That's a beautiful machine, and you've done an inspirational job in restoring it. My Singer is, I believe, a Featherweight. It's very similar to yours, but I believe it's from the 40's. I can preach about the sturdiness of these machines all day. My Grandmother was great at sewing, but lousy at...

    The 1940 USA Census

I'm just wondering what will happen as the records are indexed. Will some well-meaning historian/genealogist think it's a mistake, and change it? At least in this case, I'm certain about the census records. Big-Granny died in 1982, while I was in college; and my great-uncles and grandmother...

    The 1940 USA Census

I just finished doing a "first pass thru" on my hometown. No earth shattering surprises, although I didn't know that my great-grandparents each had three years of college. My maternal grandparents lived right where I was told they lived; renting a subdivided house at $30 a month (their friends...

    The 1940 USA Census

*BUMP* So, now that the 1940 census has been released, has anyone started on their personal treasure hunt? I'm still learning how to use it, but it's fun. Especially looking at the occupations.

    Veronica Lake hairstyle setting pattern

Hi there, Alchemist! Lisafreemontstreet does do several "Peekaboo Wave" tutorials. This one: http://youtu.be/NAUZhyGnCGc is the one she states as being the most authentically styled Veronica Lake one. It is a wetset, that combines some duckbill clips to put the "wave" in the hair, plus some very...

    Librarians?

Oy! Over here! A female librarian-who'd have thunk it:) On the one hand, I don't work around the public, and jeans are considered perfectly acceptable. And my budget is grateful. BUT. I work in a warehouse, and closed toed shoes are a requirement. That and an ability to watch out for forklifts...

    Golden Era Teenage Moms

I think I had the same thought some of y'all had when I saw that statistic. Did it account for the large number of couples that were married and having their first child when they were 18 or 19? My feet hit the ground two months (1963) before my mom turned 20, so technically she was teenage...

Skin care routine. What am I doing wrong?

You may have milia (which is kind of like a pimple, but is skin that gets trapped and forms a bead under the skin). If that's what you have, try not using any moisturizers for awhile, and gently exfoliating every other night. Eventually, you'll get the trapped "bead" close enough to the surface...

I'm a librarian for "a major book distributor". A well-formatted library record is a thing of beauty.

    Most Depressing movies you've seen?

BURNED A TEDDY? Monsters! Personally, AI gloomed me out. In fact, the whole audience seemed depressed when the lights came up. We're survived by glittery androids? Note: the Teddy made it through that one, so no moral event horizon was crossed. :) Soylent Green had moments, but even as a...

    Show Us Your Purchases!

I'm feeling much better (just sister drama nonsense: never should have accepted her "friend" request on Facebook. Oops! ) thank you. I'll put another pic up tomorrow, but if you search Etsy for bakelite ring box, you'll see a nice selection. They typically have room for one ring, and the inside...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Just a few weeks ago, I was having a Scruggs and Flatt marathon on Youtube. I could listen to Cripple Creek all night. I wish I could've seen him when he played Bonaroo :(. There was a very nice piece in The Tennessean...
