Just saw Sherlock Holmes (enjoyed it--more than the first. Stephen Fry!) and last night watched Singin' in the Rain, which is always a great pleasure. BBC Radio 4 just did a piece on the shift from silents to talkies and didn't mention SITR or Sunset Blvd. (I AM big; it's the pictures that got...
House cocktail (at my house) was a White Lady (gin, lemon juice and powdered sugar) but with I cut back the sugar and added a touch of Amaretto--the almond flavor really worked well with the gin and lemon--in this case Meyers lemons which grow just outside the kitchen windows.
Very nice! I always feel this way when I go hunting with my grandfather's Parker--12 Gauge side by side. Just went out to celebrate St. Hubertus' birthday--sporting clays. Clay pidgeons fled in fear when they saw me coming!
Shalimar, Samsara, Infini, Halston, Fleurisimo, Femme..... there are certain fragrances that I can't get enough of on a woman. Of course, if the woman is sexy/attractive, her scent will be, too. What I don't like, though, are any big, overblown scents like those from Estee Lauder--not for...
"Thrones, Dominations" which is the postumous Peter Whimsey. Given that it was co-written after the fact, it is quite good. Plenty of Dorothy Sayers in there.
Nothing smells better than Hoppe's No. 9, in my opinion. I was just out at a sporting clay shoot (St. Hubertus' feast day) and enjoyed the smell that evening when I cleaned my gun.
I have a 1948 bubble-back Oyster with a rose gold bezel. Interestingly, it is on its original strap (although nearing the end of its wearable life) and you can still make out that it had been bought at the late Donovan & Seaman's in downtown Los Angeles, which used to be housed on 7th Street in...
Here's an Autumnal thought--I am off to our local high school's homecoming game--my daughter is a senior and my wife and I both went there a hundred years ago. While it was in the upper 80s today (NOT very Autumnal), tonight it is cold enough to reach for old favorites like my Orvis suede...
Goorin Brothers just opened a handsome new store in Pasadena's Old Town. I didn't know much (okay, anything) about them but was excited at the prospect of a proper hat store coming to town. Alas, all stingies and not my cup of tea. The joint was jumpin', though!
Wider is best for me, although I have a Trilby that has a fairly short brim. I think that dimensional brims can be a great way to get the right look and balance.
Nothing, last night as it was my teaching night and I don't think that the professor showing up smelling of Scotch is a good idea BUT the night before I was out and ordered a really delicious Negroni. I always forget how much I love Campari until I have it again. My thoughts are already...
Fall makes me reach for Guerlain's Habit Rouge for some reason. Created in 1965, it is not truly vintage, but it has a classic old school leathery/vanilla/citrus vibe that seems right for this time of year. Other favorites this season are Knize Ten Golden (leather, leather and leather), 1934's...
