Fair enough, i forgot that the British Isles "summer" is not nearly as unbearable and sweltering as an NYC winter. Its not a bad look, mind you, i like the pattern, i just wouldn't do it myself. Its a shame you couldn't get it as a full suit though, no matter how loud it would be.
I like the gray and black stripes but despite the colors, they definitely look LOUD. They remind me of what Christopher Walken was wearing in Batman Returns, i believe it was a similar pattern.
My grandfather always had thick curly hair yet he seemed too seemed to always make it look managed and neat- i'd say it was pomade.
Another example (like my grandfather, Cuban) would be Fidel Castro- there is a picture of Castro as a really young man:
the one on the right:
Here he is...
I'm currently reading The Tomb of Tutankhamen by Howard Carter- an account of his excavation of the tomb in the 1920s. Its rather dry but has some interesting points nonetheless.
Since what people wore for work was essentially old worn out suits or odd jackets, this wasn't really an affected look but just putting on whatever rags that would make you more comfortable/warmer/etc. The reason this look doesn't exist now is because there is a huge supply of cheap...
I brought a black and white disposable camera (clearance for 2 bucks at my old job) with me over to Ireland and i'm surprised, black and white really makes a difference.
I also suffer from really frizzy, thick hair like you, except i've got dark hair. I've tried EVERYTHING to slick it back or make it look neat and honestly its been tough. At this point i'm more or less settled on using gel. The IC Hair polisher gel is both inexpensive, leaves few flakes, and has...
Mario- that DB suit is awesome, your suits in general are always pretty solid choices.
Shooman: thanks, i've heard that sometimes, even if i am not wearing a suit that i give off the "classic" vibe. Its good that it looks natural rather than forced, more than anything.
djgo cat: It...
A slightly cut off hat but this was the last day before the weather required a lighter suit:
I don't know why but this suit usually gets lots of compliments. I think its a 70s cut because the lapels are HUGE. I don't have any other photos of it though. It cost me 9 bucks on ebay :D. The hat...
I have a panama hat question as well- i'm interested in getting the "stetson retro panama hat". It looks good and the price is decent. But they for some reason refuse to sell it in "large" size. Does anyone know why? or perhaps they simply don't carry it until later in the year? I've looked at...
Give'em Hell Malone- some direct to video tom jane movie with neo noir twist to it. Its not a great movie but it was entertaining enough- i like the whole neo noir thing where there really isn't a particular time, ie some things are quite modern looking yet the people still wear hats and have...
I think i may have seen a FL person at JFK today- anyone here wearing brown two tone shoes with a black suit and a boater? It was a pretty sweet boater.
If they don't dismiss you offhand, the "peacock" advantage of having a good hat or a good suit will definitely make you stand out and at least get a conversation going. I'm no don juan, but i've gotten far more women talking to me when i'm clean cut and well dressed than i did when i was...
My father is a pioneer and my family had some alcohol issues back when in his time so I grew up with it drilled into my head not to drink and that its bad. I suppose in a way there is wisdom to it- its expensive and unhealthy, and puts you in situations you may later regret. I didn't touch...
Go for a black or dark colored tie i'd say. Thats what i would do in the situation. I'm sure there are more creative ways about it, but i'd just stick with that.
