My trench-coat (courtesy of italian army) would have been absolutely perfect, if it wasn't for the liner, that is "sleeveless"; which prevents me from wearing it in the coolest day of winter
(unless I'm dressing properly, with a suit or at least a coat; the coat's sleeves give me the extra...
From a purely sartorial point of view, I think lapels are too small; a little larger lapels, and it'll look a lot better, in my opinion. The leather is is kind of "plastic shiny" too, but this could be the photograph, or maybe it's some kind of pre-production specimen before the "real think".
This is identical (I'd say the same!) to the summer service jacket Italian Army adopted in the '80s; discarded after a few years because some high ranking officer disliked it (they say, because it underlined his big belly...)
I guess you could find it for few euros in markets, looking for second...
Actually Carabinieri officers and ncos wear Sam Browne belts ("cinturone con spallaccio") up to this day, and luckily nobody found this to be a "nazi" thing.
It's simply a military or police thing. They don't look bad at all; only sometimes I hear some complain about Sam Browne belts being...
??
Probably a matter of difference of sensibilities on the two sides of the Atlantic but... what's the problem? They like a leather overcoat, they purchased a leather overcoat, full stop.
I don't fear russians will go back to Stalin because of a coat!!
Probably adopted simply because someone...
As for what I've read, no single camo scheme can possibly perform equally well in every environment;
so, I second DesertDan's idea: a solid color, reasonably sober BDU (khaki, olive green, you name it) is good enough for a lot of things, while camos should be mission-specific and issued to those...
I can understand you very well; I myself felt in risk every time I was by foot and had to cross roads in Rome, and it's not that in the town in which I was born people stop for pedestrians crossing on walkways... not even the slightest idea to do so... but in Rome drivers give the impression...
Mmm
clacsoning.. don't know I've used the right term... anyway, italian car drivers are capable of everything (except, respecting the law ;) )
when I lived in Rome, one popular sport there was, er, "driving while insulting", i.e. drivers shouting at each others if one of the two did something...
I find somehow funny that appearently in the last 40 years in Italy all the craze was about "do your think", "show your own personality" and "be different"; which the vast majority translated in "be just like everyone else in your age group, and slightly different from your father's generation"...
Well, I'm quite used to see people wearing fedoras, berets and "newsboy" caps; I even met the random bowler in a couple of occasions; so I guess they were at ease and nobody had anything rude to say.
That said, it's true that in Italy (mostly in the past decades, it's definitely a dead thing)...
I had no clue on who was this Schimanski, so I searched the net and.. well, turns out I passed all my high school in Schimaski jacket (plus the epaulets), even the color was the same!
But the M51 looks way better... or is the male supermodel that does the trick? ;)
Sorry for the laaaate answer.
You were asking if in "casco coloniale M35" the pouche on a side was for the feathers of Bersaglieri, or Alpini.
Well, it depends on the side. Right side, for the numerous "wild cock" (gallo cedrone) feathers of the Bersagliere; left side for the "eagle" (actually...
In two decades or so, Italian Army uniforms (the "BDU" version) went from OD fatigues to woodland camo (with a peculiar italian version for "arid climates" worn in Somalia and Iraq) and finally to their own "digital" enhanced camo ("vegetata") in two versions (european and desertic).
In the...
Well, a sad one from Italy:
Sul ponte di Perati
(on the bridge of Perati, between Albania and Greece)
On the bridge of Perati, a black flag:
the mourning of the Alpini that are going to war
the mourning of the Alpini that are going to war
the best youth is going six feet under
in the...
I often noticed dialogues of many movies about ancient Rome as being particularly anachronistic, and sometimes distinctively "american";
including quite recent ones, as The Gladiator with lines as the infamous "At my signal, unleash hell!"
which would be simply meaningless at the time.
Ciao! :)
Well, I'm currently living in the northern-side of South Europe (North Italy) and I won't wear leather in summer for any reason. Actuallly I wore a soft lambskin jacket this morning (April 4, for the future readers ;) ) and had to put it aside, while going around doing my business in a shirt...
Scipione l'Africano; Italy, 1937.
A movie about Scipio "Africanus" and Punic wars, strongly supported by the Duce himself.
The "legionary with a wristwatch" is legendary in italian movie industry...
ciao!
Nobody beats your culture about berets, Daan! That's my beret indeed! :)
And actually, well, I'm starting to believe myself that size does matter... especially after wearing my small beret in sun and rain without receiving too much shelter and protection... so I'm thinking it's about time I'll...
Just a little upgrade about the "beret wearing" situation in Italy.
Two weeks ago, it was raining, and I wore a beret (blue, smallish, "old italian worker" style); I was hanging just outside my old Faculty at the local University, and one professor crossed the street just to talk me... he was...
