    They are flat black leather. I usually wear a 6 and they are a little snug on my foot area and my foot is kinda wide. The leather is really soft. I think they'd be fine for your 5 1/2. The calf area measures 14" If they were the 15" I think they would have fit. It does have a buckle on the side...
