1880s furniture is a little out of my league, sorry! :( Perhaps you could look up history books relating to interior design or furnishings at the library? Or include "interior design" in your searches.
The New York Times has their archive from 1851-present online, too. May be something in...
I believe it depends on whether you're dyeing vintage or modern. Modern rayon is generally stable, but since rayon was a (relatively) new fiber at that point in time, the fabrics weren't necessarily stable, and varied in how they reacted. Add the passage of time, and you get an even weaker and...
That exudes cool. Way more original than so many mainstream films today, and it has that B-movie/space age feel to it in the trailer. If the movie has the same flavor as the trailer, it could be great. I'll have to keep any eye on it.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing the link.
*sigh* The only problem with old papers being so accessible is that I can barely get through today's news, let alone news from fifty years ago!
I fall into that category too - I think I may come across as aloof and reserved at first. And I might not turn into Ms. Bubbly when greeted by a stranger. But I *do* try to smile and act friendly if someone addresses me!
+1 on a new forum. There's a ton of information packed into this one little (or not so little) thread. I know there's COW for Indiana Jones gear, but a subforum for Golden Era adventure/outdoor gear would be wonderful.
I can find something appealing in just about every era, quite honestly. :) I do have a few favorite eras, which include the 1910s and the 1930s-50s, but I love just about any historical costume. 18th century? But of course. Edwardian? Love it. I don't like everything in every time period...
Personally, I'd find it a little odd to walk into a building and see one of the employees behind a desk/counter wearing a hat. It would look almost as if they had just come in, or were ready to go out again, instead of being settled and ready to help me.
But then, I prefer the old-fashioned...
Thanks for posting the question, MarieAnne - all of this is really helpful to me, too. I'm desperately in need of a haircut and have been considering whether layered or unlayered is best for a vintage cut. Looks like layered wins out...
I agree that it looks a little boxy. From the looks of it, a couple of darts front and back would make it hug the body more. I'd suggest taking it to a proper tailor and seeing what they can do without severely altering it (unless you don't mind it being altered).
If it needs shoulderpads...
:offtopic: The seamstress in me notes that the bias plaid skirt does *not* line up at the side seams!
Back on topic, I love the trousers everyone's posting. :)
Some tips can be found at Threads' online site, here:

And if the pattern is perforated (unprinted), they have tips on that too.

You can find invisible zipper feet for Coats & Clark zippers at JoAnn's, probably Hancock's too. They're supposed to be adjustable to fit all machines, but mine is an old (vintage!) machine, and none of them worked. I finally resorted to using a regular zipper foot and just sewed very close to...
Lyburnum, that's a beautiful jacket!
I would strongly advise against dyeing it, though. Here's why:
1) The color *will* end up different from the body, and with the embroidery, there's no way to dye the whole thing. If you had test swatches (as with dyeing yardage), you could probably...
I vote for pinning it, if at all possible. Buttonholes are tricky things, especially if you've never done them before. You would definitely want to do a practice buttonhole (or two) first, but I'd really recommend a tailor unless you have prior sewing experience.
Of the listed "classics", I've only seen a few. Loved The Ten Commandments, hated Gone With The Wind, and disliked Arsenic and Old Lace.
Ten Commandments...really, I don't understand how anyone could not like it. ;) It may be overdramatic, but come on - all the costumes, lots of drama, and...
As sad as I am over losing the last month's worth of posts (and most of mine!), we now get "Choose Your Own Adventure" threads. :) Sort of a "Flip back the pages from the original ending, try another path!" thing.
