Beat me to it. A sad day. It's a bad situation all around, but the overnight disappearance of a 119-year-old corporation...well, it's simply sad. :(
From Yahoo News/Reuters:
Love the blue one. Can't say I like the plaid cape/coat; she doesn't look like she can move her arms! Maybe the arm slits should've been further to the side.
1960s styles are something I never particularly liked until recently, when I discovered the more realistic 1960s, as opposed to...
I was at the library today, and remembered to pick up the 1930s "Everyday Fashions" book. Most of it was women's clothing, but there were a few suits. Here are the colors (some were with stripes, some without):
1930:
Medium brown glen plaid
Brown
Gray glen plaid
Gray
Dark Oxford gray...
If you find some, let us know. I've got a pair of light tan heels, and they need polishing. I haven't been out to look for polish yet, but I don't remember seeing tan *anywhere*.
Theaters just aren't designed for delicate vintage, unless they'll be used only as reference garments. I've interned at a costume shop, and the clothes go through a lot on stage, and are altered to within an inch of their lives. Never ever lend anything that you don't care about losing. The...
Thanks for the scans, Lady Day and graverobbergirl!
Apparently I'm a rather ungraceful sitter, according to that book. I've also been known to cross my knees, and sprawl all over the place. :D
Actually, to buy certain glues (especially the spray adhesive kind) I've had cashiers ask me my age before! Just sick...
There's another one for you - homemade paste. Certainly not used much anymore!
I've been in Macys, and I doubt they'd have too much trouble with it. They only recently (within the past 2 years, maybe?) switched to an actual uniform - all-black clothing. I don't think the women have to wear suits, but I could be wrong.
I once had to wear all neutral colors for a job...
If I ever owned a makeup store, I do believe I'd have an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows with mirrors nearby. Even in well-lighted shops, it's so difficult to determine colors.
I'm feeling a little that way myself. *sigh*
Hot chocolate, well-buttered popcorn and a great book or movie are just the ticket when you have the tired-and-stressed blahs. However, that doesn't work so well with the I-haven't-done-a-thing-today-and-am-so-lazy blahs.
I find exercise to be...
The History of Answering Machines
According to this timeline, the first answering machine sold in the U.S. was in 1960. Voicemail didn't come along till later.
I like using my cell phone's automatic response; it's quick and saves me from re-recording a message 5 times to make it perfect...
Try to get a hold of a copy of Everyday Fashions of the Thirties, which contains copies of Sears catalogue pages. There are also companion books for the twenties, forties, and fifties. I believe you'll find pictures of suits, and IIRC, they list the available colors. The Sears catalogue stuff...
The OSS, actually, per the new movie. I can see him with an army surplus type watch, although not on any undercover missions.
I think a pocketwatch would have been the choice of our intrepid hero. He's regularly getting himself smashed into things, and a wristwatch wouldn't last 5 minutes...
I haven't tried the vinegar method, but yes - you want to let all the steam and moisture leave the fabric before moving it. That "sets" the crease better. If you leave it damp, especially with wool, you'll just set in more wrinkles when you move it.
That sounds absolutely precarious. :eek...
Erm...that is just about a *perfect* hourglass! A very desirable figure, and in a very tiny size, too. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but I sincerely doubt you have any significant figure flaws. Trust us...we know of what we speak, as we have "been there and done that". :)
I have the Talbot book too - it's a great resource. Anwen, I love all the "Make Do & Mend" tips too. :) No one today tells you how to make a new dress out of two old dresses, or how to replace worn-out sleeves or a bodice.
graverobbergirl, I think I have a companion book to the one you...
You can put board games on a card table, too. :) (I highly recommend Cranium.)
The extent of my card-game-playing knowledge involved Uno, Slapjack, and possibly a couple of other easy games along those lines. And Mafia. But that's not strictly a card game.
