    Long Vintage Hair

I have really long hair, so I don't always use a rat. If I wear rolls, it is usually all hair in them. The other option is to pin the hair on top of the rat and use the rest of it in the hairstyle (like an updo). I learned that trick from 1900-1917 hairstyling guides. I don't have a...

    Long Vintage Hair

Rosie's snoods are a good idea, and also buns. I saw a 1917 movie on Utube the other day and I thought the lead had a bob, but then partway through the film, she let her hair down and it was waist length. I was totally fooled. You could wear braids, either down for a young look, or across...

    Vintage Shoe info

I wish that would work for me. I have vintage shoes that measure from 10.5" to 12" long on the inside that all fit me. So much seems to depend on the cut of the shoe.

Oh the Stigma with wearing seamed fully fashioned stockings!

As for the garter belt. Use the heavy duty metal garter clippies. The cheapo ones will let you down every time.

    Do You Recycle?

Yup, Green bin for green stuff Blue bin for "mixed recyclables" Black bin for trash Plus the unemployed or just plain poor go around and collect anything that they can get money for with a shopping cart. It is illegal to steal trash, but not immoral in my opinion.

Oh the Stigma with wearing seamed fully fashioned stockings!

You poor thing! I know exactly what you are going through, I prefer stockings because they are healthier, and well sometimes the wind comes along (or more likely I fall on my butt) and... and I am sure that there is now a "full fashioned stocking sighting at the supermarket" thread on the...

    Day Make-Up, Evening Make-UP

Unfortunately Streamline Press is no more. I have the makeup book, which is great, but you can find a lot of that information on www.return2style.de if you can't get a hold of a copy. I would say more about daytime makeup, but lately all I wear is mascara and mineral powder (I mix my own...

    Dressing vintage in the workplace

Some may be, but I know that others (i.e. in sales) make over $200,000/year. I am not a manager, so I am not in their "bonus incentive" club. Still the receptionist drives a new Mercedes.

    Dressing vintage in the workplace

Sometimes I can sneak in a vintage blouse or skirt, but anything that stands out is not acceptable at my work. There is a fairly strict dress code, Men wear ties and dress slacks, ladies wear dress slacks or skirts, no t-shirts allowed (not that everyone follows the dress code), Friday you...

    skirt lengths?

I found the diagram on ebay, but couldn't afford to win it. But the photo was free. And Fleur, I would love to have the perfect pencil skirt pattern too. Are you going to taper it or have it be more straight?

    Lovely Vintage Fabrics

Cottons are great for house dresses and day dresses. A medium weight cotton is good for those, a soft and light filmy one for dresses with more gathers and pleats. Without patterns for reference it is hard to recommend though. They also used rayons for day dresses. Crepe is a little...

    skirt lengths?

I prefer right below the knee, if I wear them really long it is too much since I am soooo tall. Here is the definitive guide to 30's skirt lengths:

Vintage Casual wear - hosiery question

As long as your legs aren't cold, go ahead and wear socks for casual dress. My family members even wore socks with sandals in the 30's and 40's. You could also get the cotton stockings from Vermont country store for cold days.

    Health Insurance Rates?

My work gives free Blue Cross 80/20% PPO $20 copay, HMO or Kaiser plus a dental plan for free. You pay for dependants, although I forget the rates. I recall that a family was around $400/month. I have the PPO because I like the freedom, but I don't exactly relish paying 20% of a surgery. I...
