I've been setting my hair all the time for a few years now and added perms every 4 - 6 months for the last two or so. The last few times were with a hairdresser who learned her trade in the 70s when sets were still (or - 30s revival - again) common. She's incredibly fast! A standard perm is...
If your hair keeps a curl for a week(!) I really wouldn't risk another perm, home or pro. An air dried perm never looks like a pincurl set, it's just the base for a set to hold longer.
Actually this might just be a regular bob. I recently got a bob, chin length in the front, about 1" below the nape in the back, no layers. Depending on the setting pattern I can style it easily like the picture if I want to.
From what I gathered 1930s haircuts aren't that different from 1920s...
What I sometimes do (albeit usually on pre-curled hair to freshen up a set, I'm not sure how well this would work on unset hair) is to pincurl dry, pat a little bit of water onto the curls, wear a shower cap for five minutes and then let the set dry again. The high humidity and body heat under...
If you search the forum for "perm" you'll get a couple of helpful threads.
I recently had my hair permed for the second time. First time was with a perm solution for dyed hair since I use henna. (Pure henna doesn't interfere with perms, but in some henna based dyes there are additives that...
I'm very late to this request, but you might want to check out this tutorial by Lisa Freemont Street.
Of course if you have a very different length, cut or hair structure you can only get so close, even with the original set.
Thank you! If "mock seams" are period correct that's even better. I'll give it a try.
I wish I could get repro service weight FFs. Finding vintage deadstock for small feet, short legs, full thighs and fair skin is a bit too much to ask for. I love the available 15den repro FFs (usually buy them...
A question for those of you who own vintage service weight FF nylon stockings: Do they have (or need) reinforced heels that show, i.e. the cuban or havana style, at all?
I currently wear Ergora 60 denier for every day. They're 100% polyamide but still stretch a little (probably crimped yarn)...
I just bought those suede pumps in black and burgundy. A really nice 40s style shoe - and I desperately needed a replacement for my favourite Clarks "Concert Ticket" which are falling apart. The Gadea pumps aren't quite as comfy, at least not yet, but I can see myself wearing them a lot for...
When did pearlescent (mica) nailpolish come into style? I just got myself a lovey golden rose shade (peachy pink with lots of golden shimmer) but I'm not sure it really works with my mostly 40s inspired style. Usually I wear non-perlescent reds, pinks and purples.
I use Lottabody straight from the bottle on my baby fine hair. I apply three or four small dollops to pretty wet hair, concentrating on the ends and bang area. Then comb though and set. I went with the method that causes the least fuss and since it works I don't mess with it.
I love Shellac. I had been doing my own acrylic gel manicures for years, just to have my nails look tidy all the time. I never had them grow really long so the reinforcement aspect was kinda wasted. But since regular polish with natural nails starts chipping on me the minute it's dry I never had...
I don't ride bikes but I do ride horses occasionally and the helmets are quite similar. The best solution I found so far was to keep the hair pin curled with bobby pins and covered with a thin scarf. Wear helmet on top of that, then style upon arrival. No great ideas for the way home though ...
I just bought a great vintage fox stole on ebay, the complete with head, tail and paws version. There must be several ways to wear this: it has a chain and hook, a clip underneath the head and a diagonal fabric loop at breast height (see pictures).
I get that you can clip it to a belt or...
Dunno about Motions, but did you try Lottabody? It's available here: http://www.afro-cosmetic-shop.de/Firmen-A-Z/Lottabody
I love that stuff. I have fine hair as well. I use very little, undiluted, working it with my hands through all of my towel dried hair, comb through and set.
Have you tried roller setting your hair? You can use more tension with rollers than with pin curls to smooth out that kink. You'd probably need a hood dryer though for a wet set unless you can sleep in rollers or let it dry during the day.
