"Mr.Sommerset; I ask you kindly to take the focus of your conversation off the smaller sized hat sized folks, like me, and positively interact with the market sellers. Attempting to make others feel bad so that you may feel better about not finding your prized hat in your size is not admirable...
OK, here is a perfect example of why ebay is dangerous and frustrating for collectors and uniformed sellers both.
So, this seller has a Stetson Beach Comber for sale. Yes, they are fairly rare and I've seen few on the bay before and yes, I don't own one but would love to. Now, this is how the...
I think people are conflating "must be wide brimmed and tall crowned" with "that's the only hat that should be allowed."
Now, to me, yes 2-1/2 brims or larger is a must. But when I say that I am not saying that stingier brims don't qualify as a fedora! Nor am I saying no one should be allowed...
"What hats do Stetson not stick x's on ?"
That really isn't a good question because nearly every model style they made had a corresponding version that was an X style. For instance, they had Open Roads that were just ORs with no Xs, and then ORs that had an X on them along with the "Open Road"...

"I have a theory on 'worth' and that is ... a hat is only 'worth' what it is worth to the owner and/or someone trying to buy it."
I agree and disagree. I agree in a general sense, but disagree that the generality negates the fact that everything has a market value.
What I mean is that if you...
Nixon wore a fedora in office, too. Reagan wore cowboy hats. According to threads right here, the hat industry was noticing the decline in sales starting the the 1930s. My guess is that it started when men started worrying more about their hairstyles.
I don't know that we have any clue at all what Stetson's designations mean after 1968, do we? Previous to that, at least we know some of what things might have meant, but after that? What's a 500X? 30X? Who the hell knows?
