    Hats and civility

I cannot say that I am able to divide men of having or not having manners simply by what is or is not on top of their head. Surely I have had bad experiences with "jocks," which is who I commonly see with baseball caps, but I also know some congenial men who also don a baseball cap. I have never...

    Mrs Henderson Presents

Oh, thanks for posting this and the images! I heard about the movie but I was unsure of what the plot was, but now that I know, I am definitely going to see it. Thanks!

    Hats and civility

First of all, vespasian's remark of a woman parading about with a "cherry trifle perched on her head" gives me a wonderful image in my head. I think this is a very interesting thread and I am curious as to the letters the author of the article will receive. The point Raindog made of the price...

Makeup: do i gottta wear it?

I heard of this great trick years ago that may help. Get an old toothbrush you need to retire, dab some vasaline on the bristles and gently "brush" your lips with it. The bristles take off the dry crackle bits while the vasline moisterizes . According to the article, it is what make-up artists...

    Copyright Laws?

If the image you are looking at using is copyrighted, you can use it only if you change it 75%. For example, if you re-draw it (or have someone do it for you) and change it significantly it then becomes the property of the artist.

    Scans from American Hairdresser Magazine

I know there are a lot of hair threads already, but I was thinking that we have a post for showing off our hair styles, that we should also have one for old hair magazines and tutorials. This way we have one area to learn more fabulous styles and tricks! These scans are from the December 1942...

    Authentic Hair Troubles

Miss Neecerie, I got the home page when I clicked the link, are you talking about this triple barrel iron? http://www.tsetters.com/catalog/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Vidal_Sassoon/Specialty_Irons&image=VS028.jpg&img=&tt= If what you say is true, about the brushed out finger wave look...

Sewing Machines What kind of sewing machines do you ladies use to make your wonderful creations? I have a Singer FeatherWeight II, which frankly, is just not meeting my expectations. linkeroo to image: http://img.idealo.de/folder/Product/297/3/297316/produktbild_gross.gif I constantly have...

Sharing your love of vintage with the children?

I agree with the no television rule. I don't have any children of my own, but most of my relatives raise their children in a tv-free home. Their children are very imaginative and extremely smart, going into AP classes in their schools. For getting their news, they listen to NPR and read...

As if we didn't chat about pin curls enough. . .

Vintage Hair Magazines? What a great post! I've been trying to look for vintage hair magazines that would contain styles and possibly a how-to. Does anyone know any magazine names that may contain such things?

    Authentic Hair Troubles

MissTayva, What kind of wave can you achive with the triple barrel iron? I'm imagining that it could make something like this: Or am I being too optimistic?

As if we didn't chat about pin curls enough. . .

It was in the community's memories. The mod mentioned it in a recent post and a little lightbulb went off, "Oh yeah..live journal communities have a memory section where I can skip over all the crap!" I'm going to try the chunky technique this weekend and see what results I get.

A Pin Curl Tutorial I'm the type of gal that needs pictures of the hair setting process. The diagram thing doesn't really work for me. With that, here is a link to a photo guided pin curl tutorial: http://www.livejournal.com/community/vintage_hair/582692.html A little of a warning here -...

How does a girl keep warm?

I totally forgot about furs! How did I do that? My mother gave me a fur of hers years ago, but it is a short one that ends at the waist. Not exactly period, nor will it help keep my legs warm. I have some nice vintage coats, but their length is knee to mid-calf. I would love to get an ankle...

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

Well that is a shame. Very odd because I'm a curser and I quite like that there is no cursing in the forums. In reading someone's words it is so much harder to understand tone or if there is humor behind it. Not cursing just helps keep drama down in an internet community. Also...no pin-ups...

How does a girl keep warm?

Winter Wear? Quite new here and am a little confused about winter clothing. Most of the vintage clothes I own are dresses or skirts, and most of the clothes I see in vintage mags are of the same. So what did ladies do in the winter? Thick wool socks and just tough it out? I live in Chicago...

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

One more to throw into the pile I've been a member for a few weeks and didn't have time to introduce myself until now. I found the lounge through a 1930's livejournal community and am so happy I did! My favorite eras are the 30's and 40's, but I am just begining to start my collection of...
