Falling-down easy.
Easy as falling off a log.
Easy as pie.
Piece of cake.
(I've also heard the combo "Cake and pie" to describe a simple task or set of tasks.)
I also recall "I'll settle this hash" or "I'll settle his hash", meaning to resolve an issue or argument. Generally, this was said in irritation or anger about some person and implied physical conflict or the threat of it.
Jeremiah Johnson: [Jeremiah and Caleb find Del Gue buried to his neck in sand] Are you all right?
Del Gue: Sure, sure, I got a fine horse under me!
[sneezes]
Del Gue: Got one of them feathers in my nose.
Jeremiah Johnson: You keep sneezing, it'll come out all right. Haven't seen anyone pass...
I very seldom hear the the term "Rub shoulders with . ." (As in "Tommy was out rubbing shoulders with the Mayor the other night.") I throw it out there myself every now and then and the twenty-somethings that I work with have no idea what I mean.
I don't care for feathers in any of my hats, but I could understand if someone wanted to add some color to an all black hat, preferably something that complemented their tie/shirt color. SOMEBODY must like them as many new hats come with a feather already in place.
The very film that occurred to me when the subject was mentioned. I enjoyed it very much; haven't heard a mention of it in decades. That reminds me of My Favorite Year (1982), also starring O'Toole; this film was about making a television comedy/variety show with O'Toole playing a seasoned...
I agree that boxing needed to clean up it's act, a lot of the scoring seemed ludicrous or had an agenda. I also agree that an American Heavyweight Champion would draw a lot of eyes; people like to see something of themselves reflected in a fighter and Heavyweights tend to get more attention...
So there are 5 "legitimate" sanctioning bodies and 17 to 18 different weight classes for a conservative total of 85 separate titles? Plus, there are many Regional Champions within the "legitimate" bodies (North American Boxing Federation, NAB Association, etc.) And every sanctioning body...
The saddest thing about that is how his position in the Court is going to be fought over. Both parties have already stated their intentions to make the appointment; anyone nominated is going to have a very difficult time of it no matter their qualifications.
Sterkowski Cap arrived - Maciejowka Cap
Excellent looking cap. Did you order it direct? What exact model is it/price point is it; there seem to be several that are similar on their site.
Thank you.
I appreciate your posting this. It puts my agonizing over whether to buy a jacket at Goodwill for the full $5.95 price or risk waiting to see if it makes it to the 50% off color of the week into the proper perspective.
Boxing consumed itself. Instead of five or six weight classes there became scads of them (light welter, bantam, super featherweight, etc.) and just how many sanctioning bodies are there now? By trying to make nearly every card feature a title fight of some kind, being a champion meant very...
Another warning phrase that seems lost these days is telling someone to "Can it", as in throw it in a trash can, lose it, stop it, etc. Then there's the military variant of "Sh*t can it", which usually referred to a physical object or project rather than a behavior or attitude.
I prefer the synonym "Hornswoggled". I love the comedic effect in older films where a character who's been duped realizes he's "been had" (another lost term) and declares "Egad! I've been hornswoggled!"
Another warning phrase I used to hear is "You're on thin ice, boy." Probably used more in the Northern climes, but universally understood. It was especially effective if your foot had ever actually broken through thin ice in shallow water and gotten a "soaker".
