The flat leather strap that goes behind your head seems to work best with a campaign hat. You can get one inexpensively from any law enforcement supply store. There are several on the net. They also have the cords n' nuts in various colors. Also not expensive.

I was hoping it would rain in this part of Kansas again someday ... not for me so much, but I have a son who's 25 and I would like for him to see what it's like.
Not a lot of umbrella sales around here.
Sam
Great catch, HE!
There was a company making a Karl Kolchack straw at one time ... priced at a couple hundred bucks as I remember.
For a hat that was being worn by a hero who was at the shallow end of the journalism pay pool!
That's irony for ya!
Sam
You are right, it's one of the neat things about wearing a hat on a regular basis. You really can change your look according to how you wear it.
Up in front does have a casual touch, especially with a hat that has a fairly "flat" brim.
As has been pointed out here, if the brim is too...
Mike,
I always wondered what happened to that one-way pony!
I used stampede string ... we called them bonnet straps ... a lot years ago when I did a lot of trail riding and just wore cowboy hats on the job. When you're taking pictures at a crash site, the last thing you want is to have a...
Monbla ...
Those are some great looking bands!
Thanks for the suggestion.
Now I'm sure I don't want to just cob some hair and weave my own!
I still may grab a rattler before they hunker down for the winter.
Maybe there's still one out back by the john ...
Sam
Here in Kansas we usually just go out front and harvest out own horsehair and braid away, but I've got a busy week ahead, so I'm not going that route.
Thanks for the suggestions.
In the old days, anyone who braided horsehair was suspect because it was one of the skills that were often...
There are some locals out here who do that and the beadwork, too. Some of the bead work is too busy, but if you can pick the colors on the beads or the horsehair, you can get something that really is one-of-a kind.
Sickly, I have also considered going with rattlesnake.
I dug out an old...
I just checked.
It's A Christmas Story House in the search and go to the gift shop.
They have the adult sized Flick helmets for $34.99.
Just don't fall for any triple dog dares!
Sam
Last Christmas I was doing some research and found there was a website for the Christmas Story house. They were selling adult-sized Flick leather hats.
I don't know if that would be cool or not, but it is interesting!
Sam
In modern schools it's spelled with a "Z" I believe.
Off to another topic ....
I found a couple of great sites that specialize in woven horsehair bands that would look great on a Bushman. Some of them are fairly affordable, too.
It is difficult to see exactly what the colors are on...
YIKES!
I hadn't thought of that!
Will an umbrella stop a mudslide?
No wonder they are so popular!
Everything is flat here, so the mud has to get blown by the tornadoes. No slides.
Sam
I WAS wearing my black Squatter today, but I was shocked -- SHOCKED I SAY -- to discover there really WAS a grommet bulge under the ribbon.
I immediately removed the hat and burned it at the stake.
No grommet bulge for me!
I also discovered an uneven number of puckers on my loafer, a...
That shot of James Taylor is like the great pics of Johnny Depp ... they are discouraging in that they are utilizing a very singular vintage hat.
In this case, it's especially singular because of its texture with the really long finish.
That is also encouraging, too, though. You don't have...
PS.
This last winter, I found a new condition Whippet, gray on gray, like the second row, left, at our local Salvation Army. It was priced at $3.99. Sadly it was a size 6 7/8
Happily I have a good friend and hat collector who is a pin head.
The Whippet found a new home and I get to see it...
