A question -- perhaps Art himself can answer? If I remove the brim binding on this Hoosier, will the stitches show, or is the beaver felt such that they'll close over and I'll have a perfect raw edge?
I like bound brims, but the ribbon color on the edge is just a touch too red/maroon for me...
On the other hand, have you ever seen a hat with the same *combination* of features as Depp's? Hollywood brim; one size too big; huge crown with a high deep pinch?
Well, not that I wish to be mysterious or anything, but that first photo is probably the most explicit noggin-shot I'll ever post.
I'm just weird about having my picture all over the internet.
Although I do think it gives a good idea of how much better looking the hat is than I am...
From DOUGLAS: Dobbs 15 and Portis Open Road
These are the other two hats I received from Douglas. The Dobbs has the thinnest felt I've ever experienced: it honestly feels like paper. The hand is superb; but I don't think it's going to last more than a season or two. Impossible to bash it...
Well, having anything shipped across the Mexican border is a hassle. If it's something toxic/explosive, I'm sure it's worse. I've been having all sorts of nightmares recently with mail and courier stuff.
Might try that spray shellac! Thanks!
Thanks -- should have made it clear, though: I'm in Mexico. Might be able to find that stuff here, but it would be a lot easier if the hairspray worked.
Yes, I read through all those threads -- my concern was this remark: "Don't use hair spray. I tried that once. It stiffened the hat but left a thick, sticky white film. It was pretty awful."
Hence my question about spraying the *inside* of the hat. I take it this would solve things? Or...
Okay, I don't live in a country where it's easy to get hat stiffener. I've heard mixed reviews for hair spray, but I need *something*, as this hat I'm bashing -- a lovely Dobbs 15 -- has felt approximately the thickness and consistency of paper. I've removed the liner -- I always do -- and I'm...
Uh, I did say that. Urgh. My subconscious has a sense of humor.
By the way, if it *doesn't* work, then what you can do is remove the binding on the edge of the brim. I guarantee you'll have no problems then; I did this with an old Knox with a curled edge, because the ribbon was not going...
Fully Fedorated Quasi-Homburg
Well, my experiment seems to have turned out well: I've completely flattened the front edge of the brim on a hat that looked pretty much like the one we're discussing. Involved some work: first I wet the entire trim around the edge, and stretched it with my...
I was under the impression that homburgs had hard edges. I've had three fedoras with seriously curled brims like this -- they looked odd snapped down in front, but I was told they were still fedoras, because the edge of the brim was soft. I'm trying to bash one now so that I can snap the brim...
It really is a great lid. I suspect (while knowing nothing), that it feels like hats did in the age before really thin felt came into fashion (mostly for economic reasons). This is a *solid* hat.
Limited Edition Hoosier
Thought I'd post this here as well: my entry into the world of Vintage Silhouettes. Hoosier, previously owned by DOUGLAS. I put a diamond bash into it, which took lots of water and steam:
The felt is thicker than anything I've bashed before; not easy, but I suspect...
Doin' the Depp
Save your money and practice doing the Johnny Depp patented bash. That way you can get any vintage hat with a wide brim and a high crown to look like his. The crucial thing (I've now done this a couple of times) is to get the front profile of the crown right: almost...
Art Fawcett Hoosier, Rebashed
One of three gorgeous hats to arrive from DOUGLAS, in trade for Borsalinos. I spent hours putting this into shape -- the center dent was causing a severe taper from side to side, so I decided to put a deep diamond bash into it, with a sort of sine-wave profile...
I'm with the Baron: mix it up.
The collector in me tends to regard the bound brim as a slightly more exquisite object; but when the hat's on your head, it really depends upon your attitude du jour. If you're feeling punk, all that extra ribbon's going to annoy you.
