This hat is used. The price is being set by the current seller, not Gucci. There's no indication as to what the original price was.
Your ire is misplaced.
This isn't junior high, and I can assure you that the teller isn't sitting at the "cool kids" table. If he does it again you can discuss his demeanor with his manager.
They opened a few weeks ago. Here's a link to a story in Time Out - Chicago about their new, spectacular, store: http://timeoutchicago.com/shopping-style/shopping/15073267/optimo-hats-opens-in-the-monadnock-building
Don't forget, you're buying VAT free. This amounts to about 15% of the listed price. You may have to remind them to deduct VAT from your price. If my calculations are correct, this represents a savings of about $165. All incoming US duties will be on you.
Peacoats?
I've worn fedoras with everything from Aloha Shirts to 50+ year-old cashmere topcoats, from jeans and (pseudo)biker jackets to expensive suits.
But what about peacoats? I just can't decide about peacoats?
What do you think? Photos?
Yes...but... It's not like changing an open crown from Art Fawcett or Optimo. Neither is it as stiff as your standard Stetson/Beaver/Dobbs. Steam works well. And it is sharp looking!

The service was ok, not as good as the Aussies, but the hat made it here ok. If you do purchase, be sure to follow the instructions carefully, as the prices on the web include VAT...
Actually it's a street level store near a custom tailor and a custom shoe repair shop, as well as a high-end women's store.
You know what they say about assuming, right?
If you go here: http://www.superstock.com/stock-photography/Hat%20shops and scroll down (almost to the bottom) there's a photo of a hat seller at a Chilean rodeo. He's selling the sombrero de huaso, and his company name is visible on the stand.

$200 - $300 seems pricey for an unknown quality.
There used to be a Thread on "The dumbest comments I ever heard." You could get some ideas from that. In your specific instance "You kiss your mother with that mouth?" would be an appropriate response.
If this is a "walking from the car to the office" hat, then a Montecristi is the way to go, always remembering their dirty little secret: the finer the weave the hotter the hat.
If this is a working hat then a Tilley (www.tilley.com) can't be beat. I've had one for decades (yes, decades) and...
