I am not an expert in violins and don't want to be perceived as playing one on internet TV:rolleyes: Googling the name of the maker gave several results showing that he was a real person and fine luthier. This violin shows his work: https://ifshin.securesites.net/vln/bourguignon12831.jpg...
I am a professional bassist and know a bit about string instruments. Labels are about the last thing buyers should look at. Experienced buyers look at things like varnish, ff holes and other aspects of the design and workmanship. The first thing I saw was the lack of oxidation on the...
I've been grinding for a few years. My first grinders were inexpensive blade grinders, then a Cuisinart burr and I bought a KitchenAid Pro-Line recently. A proper grinder really helps the flavor. I also roast my own beans but that's another thread. :o
Nice score! I bought an older version of this same hat but with a black band and no wind trolley for a bit less but in a vintage store so I think you did well. The Cavanaugh edge is nice.
This forum is something I am thankful for this Christmas. Seeing all the wonderful pictures of people wearing great hats so well is a daily habit that brings me joy.
All the best to you all this Season.
Browns can work with greys too. I have a Borsalino Torino in a medium brown (mocha) with a 2" black band that is pretty versatile. Do you have a pic of the Borso?
I found a little antique shop in Nebraska several weeks ago with a few hats. Scooping up a $5 Stetson brown velour in my size I wished there were more in the 7 3/8+ range. The owner quickly went to the attic and returned with several hats in various condition, some with boxes...
The Winehouse/Bennett version is a commercial joke but it does serve to introduce a beautiful tune to people who may dig deeper. It is the baby formula to Hawk's porterhouse steak.
Fletch,
I don't believe the music of the 1930's is dead, but I'm a musician so whadoiknow??
Although this thread pertains to finding the music (recordings) that listeners in the 1930's would have been familiar with I approached the question from the angle of all the great music written then...
I was in your shoes just a few months ago, wearing flat caps and gaining the confidence to wear a fedora in public. Once I began to forget I was wearing a hat I began to get some compliments and now people expect to see me in a nice fedora. I doubt we'll convert many from baseball caps but...
I have a dozen or more flat caps. All but two have one snap, a full 8 panel has two. The nicest and most expensive one is a Borsalini Doria which is sewn shut. The brim is nicely joined to the cap without any of the uneven puckering from the snap. I would never wear one unsnapped.
On the contrary, I compliment Miss Maine for her extensive list. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap
However, there are many artists who had extensive careers in later decades who were also popular in the 1930's. Bing Crosby, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington to name a few...
Lizzie, you have dug deep into the vault for those names. :eusa_clap
I found this site by searching '1930's bands'. Don't know why the aforementioned names didn't make this list:

The distinction between 'improvised' and 'dance'...
From http://www.jazzstandards.com/history/index.htm
Despite the effects of the Great Depression, the period from 1929 to 1940 is the era where the majority of jazz standards originated. During this decade there were a great many excellent songwriters contributing well-crafted material for...
Matt,
I'm interested in the other one you have listed to replace my $40 Cuisinart for French Press brew. Are the burrs replaceable on these? Do you know the burr size?
My email is gdclink @yahoo.com if you prefer to do it outside the Lounge. I love the styling on these old machines.
