What did this symbol mean on Allied aircraft?
Whilst the TV series was popularised in the 60s, The Saint books (on which the TV series was based) were enormously successful in the 30s. The Saint symbol was developed for the books and was seen on the covers. Hence how you see the symbol as nose art on some airframes during the War. -

Goatskin -- any input?
Anybody who thinks that goatskin doesn't/can't age beautifully should have a look at Mike1973's civilian A-2 from a few years back. Maybe it took some time to look like this but this would give any HH jacket a run for its money in the patina and good-looking stakes...- Smithy

Remember there were hundreds of different styles and variations with those old civilian flight jackets. So you can see both with or without epaulettes on these versions of these "bomber" jackets.- Smithy

Yup, the Stratoliner with or without mouton collar is typical of many civvie mid 20th century flight jackets. I actually only just realised that this thread was originally for Mark's Stratoliner.
