The material used for their sweatbands is called grosgrain. It is commonly found in felt and straw roll up hats. Custom hatters will also use it upon request. It makes for a lighter hat and it wears more comfortably, IMO. Glad you enjoyed your walk........
That's not the easiest fabric to mend but WAT will do as good a job as can be done. They've mended some tricky fabrics for me and while I always can see a slight trace (because I know where to look) nobody else can spot the fix. Send them the photo and they can give you a ballpark estimate. Good...
It might make a little difference but these finely woven hats don't wear that cool anyway. The dirty little secret about Panamas: the finer the weave the hotter the hat.
Personally, for hot weather I prefer a vented straw......
