CAIRO (Reuters) - Archaeologists have discovered two gold coins in the Sinai peninsula dating to the era of Eastern Roman Emperor Valens...
As I'm married to a Polish person, I cannot get away with hating vodka. The one I have drunk the most has been Monopolowa. It's made by Polish people living in France. Trader Joe's used to have it for cheap. It was the best you could get for that price. The Poles are fanatics about vodka and...
I went to Catholic Mass on Easter in Eugene, Oregon with my wife (I'm not religious, but she is and I'm a good husband). I had on a dark blue early 1940s DB, spectators, and my Lucien de Brabant 1950s gray fedora. On my way out, the priest grabbed my hand, shook it, and said "I like your hat...
Yes, and also in the ancient period, Roman slaves were often freed as well, especially in the master's will. (Evidence is literary sources, many tombstones, and sale papyri from Egypt.) Then upon manumission they became Roman citizens. Yes, they were looked down upon somewhat by the snobs (such...

Well, that's fine, I suppose. The definition seems a bit strict, but as you wish.
Vonnegut ... hmmm. I might think of Slaughterhouse 5 science fiction. His novel about the abstract painter annoyed me so much that I never went back to him. Cat's Cradle? I cannot remember the title. I'm fine...
My favorite Harlan Ellison is the short story "I have no mouth and I must scream." Unforgettable. Better than Kafka ... better than anything.
As for Plato: please let us not discuss him in the same sentence as Martha Stewart. I like Martha S. and my wife gets her magazine, but that is like...
Nice thread. Nuns forced good handwriting on us, but after learning it, I refused to continue with it and developed an angry style of all-caps printing. I want to write in cursive again and I certainly know how, but no opportunity.
Haven't read much SF in a while, but my favorites were:
Time Machine by HG Wells
Anything by Ursula LeGuin, especially Left Hand of Darkness
Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe (OK, science fantasy)
Schismatrix by Bruce Sterling
The portable bars that I have seen have a hard case with handle. I have one. I have not seen a soft leather one with shoulder strap, personally. I think a hard case works because it protects the glass of the bottle. But the padding would work.
Thanks for the Hebrew-Latin madness, VB. I couldn't see well enough to read the words, but I'm sure you are right. Maybe I should wear my monocle to see better? Oh no, I can't mention a monocle or certain ladies will freak out. Never mind. Anyhow, nice book.
