I was born in 1961, and so my idea of how an adult male dressed was formed during the 1960s, when gents still wore suits and, to a lesser extent, hats. In my mind, when I put on a suit, I'm dressing like a grownup. :)
I think it's the build rather than the age. Carnaby Street fashion was geared very strongly toward the slender, protein-starved children of English WWII-era food rationing.
I think Quigley has the right idea.
Regarding that stand of trees, they've tried cutting them down, but new saplings keep coming up from the roots. You only saw the Hakenkreutz in the fall, when the larches turned colors and the surrounding evergreens didn't.
Gary Sinise is an exception to the declining trend of Hollywood. He's a throwback to the era of the journeyman character actor. He's a decent human being, too.
Red Skelton had a whole routine built around a bare hat body, shaping it, turning it upside down and such. He got a lot of mileage out of that bare hat body.
I've seen a few J.C. Penney hats on the 'Bay, and I'd love to know how well made they are. Give us a report when you have 'em in your hands, OK. They look darn good in the pictures.
You wear a size 7? If so, you're lucky, I've seen some really nice hats in that size, including a Cavanagh...
That Stetson is marvelous! If you were a stinker you could put it on the 'Bay and multiply that price by 10. No way, though, that's definitely a keeper.
Interesting thing on the liner, "Dr. M.C." Not "Hammer" I'm guessing. lol
You do have to adapt as the years go by. A good example was Joan Blondell who was a bombshell, and her image entirely changed as she got older and she gave some truly great and un-self conscious performances.
Not so good? How 'bout Ray Milland in The Thing with Two Heads?
Not really, it seems about the same as my other Stetsons of the time. It's a shorter brim, about 2-5/8".
The really light Stetson felt is the "Playboy." That one's light as a feather. I basically have to shape it (or at least touch it up a bit) every time I pick it up. The Playboy...
Said as you're wearing my brown Homburg (that I plumb forgot to bid on... still kicking myself on that one!) :)
Thanks! It's a winner. This will be one of my main hats, whether I'm in a '20s, a '30s, a '40s or a '50s mood.
